HBO's best current shows.
Hader's ing cast of names like Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Henry Winkler, and Anthony Carrigan help propel the show even further, as the whole cast thrives in both comedic and dramatic acting. Audiences have celebrated the series' first two seasons. Barry has earned a score of 8.3/10 on IMDB and a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as six Emmys and twenty-three additional nominations. All of this positive momentum should translate into a captivating Season 3.
Updated on May 28th, 2021 by Kristen Palamara: Barry is still a surprising series after airing an engaging two seasons on HBO that balances tragedy and comedy as Barry the hitman attempts to move on from his past. There are some things about Barry season 3 that are a given, like most of the main characters are returning and it plans to have a similar tone to the first two seasons. Although there's not a lot of information about the next season of Barry, and that might be for the best as the series is known for its surprising storylines and characters, here are a few things to help fans out until they can finally see the new season.
Funny And Tragic Things To Come
In an interview with Variety, Bill Hader mentioned that Barry would keep its balance of comedy and tragedy that it's had since the beginning of the show.
It makes sense that creators Hader and Alec Berg would want to keep the same tone as the first few seasons of the show for continuity and it's obviously working for them as fans, and critics, love the balanced comedic and dramatic moments on the show.
No Official Release Date Yet For Season 3
The new series has finally begun filming in early 2021, but the team and HBO still haven't released an official date for season 3.
It's good to know that the series has been fully written, is filming, and they're working on it in general, but it's frustrating for fans not to have a date to countdown to yet, but likely a release date will be announced soon as the season is finished.
Barry Hasn't Officially Been Renewed For Season 4
Although the cast and writers have mentioned that between the delay for filming the 3rd season they were able to mostly write season 4, HBO hasn't officially renewed the show for a new season.
Season 3 is filming and will be released soon most likely even though there's not an official release date, and Hader has mentioned he'd be surprised if it wasn't renewed again since they've already done so much work on season 4 even considering filming the two seasons at the same time, but the official public word from HBO hasn't come through yet.
Season 3 Production Was Delayed, But Now Started
In an interview with People, Winkler explained that the crew was in the early pre-production phase of Season 3 when the coronavirus hit in the spring. Like many other films and shows, the team behind Barry was forced to delay the newest season's production until uncertainty regarding the virus is cleared up.
Winkler added, "Oh my god, I miss these people," referring to the rest of the cast. He explained how they hadn't been on set together since December of 2018, and he's eager to get back in front of the camera.
Filming Began Early 2021
As stated above, filming for Barry season 3 had been delayed similarly to many other projects that were scheduled to film in 2020.
Even though there was a delay, they've started filming now in early 2021 and hopefully will continue with that momentum maybe even starting to work on season 4 as the writing for the series has already begun and most likely they will be renewed for the new season.
Sally's Acting Career Is On The Upswing
At the tail end of Season 2, Sally (Sarah Goldberg) had an excruciatingly important showcase to impress potential agents. After a fit of stress, she consults Barry, her sole partner in the production and current love interest, on how she should approach her performance. It is a scene Sally wrote based on domestic violence she endured from her ex-husband, and Barry tells her to dial back on sensationalism and basically, stick with the truth.
Contrary to Barry's advice, Sally improvises when she goes on stage and gives a bold, tough-hearted performance. However, it may not have been as truthful. Regardless, the audience and the agents she was trying to impress loved it and clamor around her afterward. Sally's evolution as an actress will make for a fascinating side plot for Season 3.
Might Be Filming Season 3 And 4 Together
With the extra time added by production delays that seem to pile on and on, Hader and Berg have been able to start writing Season 4. According to Root's interview with Collider, the cast and crew are hoping HBO will confirm a Season 4 prior to restarting production for Season 3 so that they can hit two birds with one stone, so to speak.
Nevertheless, there is a risk for both HBO and the people behind Barry if they decide to go this route. It may be difficult to write Season 4 prior to filming Season 3 and giving its episodes their final cuts. Season 4 of Barry hasn't been officially announced yet and it could be difficult to shoot two seasons at once.
Gene Knows Barry Killed His Girlfriend
The cliffhanger left by the Season 2 finale shows Gene (Henry Winkler), acting aficionado and Barry's acting mentor, alone in jail as he exclaims, "Oh my God," and the credits pop on. The short scene reveals how Gene is aware that Barry is a killer and that he killed his late girlfriend.
Gene is in jail after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend, as Barry stands aside and lets Gene take the fall. There will undoubtedly be a standoff between Gene and Barry, which will be gloriously gut-wrenching because Barry has been concealing this secret from Gene for the entirety of Season 2, all while Gene puts in extra time and effort to mentor Barry. Gene's gonna lose it!
Barry And Fuches Are On Bad
Things between Barry and Fuches have been rocky for a while now. As Season 2 ensued, Barry became more and more focused on his acting career which bothers his "hit-boss," as Fuches loses money and has to bear the consequences when Barry is a no-show for jobs. The toxic relationship eventually evolves into Barry's murder spree near the end of Season 2.
Barry kills everyone in a hideout as he pursues Fuches and NoHo Hank, who both escape the blood bath alive. Hader and Root have rather magical chemistry on-screen and it will be entertaining to see if they reconcile their relationship, or spend Season 3 as total adversaries.
No New Characters
The team behind Barry hasn't publicly addressed whether new cast will be hopping aboard for Season 3. Most likely, there will be several guest appearances and maybe one or two more extended character additions. Hader and Berg may want to keep these new faces as a surprise, or it may just be the same cast.
It is confirmed that Hader will be returning along with the other core actors: Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Henry Winkler, and Anthony Carrigan. It makes sense that the cast is giddy to return as most of them have received Emmy nominations for their performances.
