Michael Keaton's Batman is revealed to have a Robin in Batgirl set photo mural. Batgirl stars Leslie Grace as the titular character in the first-ever live-action feature film for the character. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) and written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), Batgirl will serve as an origin story for the DC superhero, which will also star J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, who also played the character in Zack Snyder's Justice League, as well as Brendan Fraser as the supervillain Firefly.
Batgirl will also star Michael Keaton, reprising his role as Batman for the film, which is assumed to be in a mentor-like capacity. Keaton played Batman twice for Tim Burton, starring in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns, before hanging up the cowl when presented with a new creative direction in Batman Forever. The actor also appears in Andy Muschietti's The Flash, which releases later this year, serving as another re-introduction of Keaton's version of The Caped Crusader.
In some new pics from the set of Batgirl (via glasgowlive), which is filming in Glasgow, Scotland, a mural of Keaton's Batman has been revealed, which has The Dark Knight next to The Boy Wonder, Robin. This is the first time Keaton's Batman has been shown alongside his famed sidekick character, wearing the classic Robin costume rather than any of the many updated versions in the comics. It's thus far unclear if Robin will appear in the film in any capacity, but this shows that he exists in this corner of the DCEU. Take a look at the images at the link below:
In the comics, Chris O'Donnell played Robin/Dick Grayson in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Both Brenton Thwaites and Curran Walters played the Grayson/Jason Todd versions for DC's Titans series, which is thus far not connected to the DCEU.
Robin finally appearing in the DCEU proper is a good move, and introducing him with Keaton would be the right move. Of course, this could be similar to Snyder's Batman V Superman fate, with the mural merely showing the Dynamic Duo in their heyday, rather than current status. Robin, by all s, could be deceased or retired (or even graduated to Nightwing status), so it's hard to gauge how much can be assumed by the mural alone, outside the fact that a Robin exists in Batgirl's world. What that means for Barbara Gordon and her interactions with Batman should be telling, and it makes the overall Bat-family investment of Batgirl that much more intriguing.
