A variant cover of the Dark Knights of Steel #1 was recently revealed by Tom Taylor, showing a gorgeous image of Game of Thrones-esque setting. The cover is the creation of Malaysian artist Kael Ngu and highlights the promised epic tone of the dark fantasy story.
Dark Knights of Steel #1 is set to be released on November 2. Written by Tom Taylor and penciled by Yasmine Putri, the premise of the twelve-issue maxiseries is a sort of Elseworld’s Tale, featuring a brand-new high fantasy iteration of the DC Universe. The series will focus on not only Batman, but many other DC heroes including Superman, Wonder Woman, and Black Lightning as well. Taylor says that his love for superheroes and fantasy novels is what inspired the beautiful merging of the two featured in previewed images such as Kael Ngu’s cover.
Taylor A Song of Ice and Fire novels. However, the composition of the image also paints a grim picture that captures Game of Thrones’ themes of political intrigue and the nature of power as well.
The specific plot details of Dark Knights of Steel are mostly unknown, and art featuring the DC Trinity working together has been featured extensively, but Ngu’s cover suggests Batman and Superman will be opposing each other to some degree. The golden, god-like Superman looms over Batman in the image, but Batman is also the one who has taken the throne. It seems to imply that the two will be coming into conflict over who maintains power within their kingdom. Even in the normal DC universe, Batman and Superman have struggled to trust each other despite being such good friends, so it would be a natural direction for the story to take.
However, this is just pure speculation. Ultimately, readers will have to wait until November to see how Dark Knights of Steel will play out. Still, Kael Ngu’s cover hints at what may be in store for the champions of Taylor and Putri’s medieval DC universe. It shows the impact that Batman and Superman will likely have on the world and s a perfect blend of DC superhero action and Game of Thrones-style high fantasy.
