WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for WONDER WOMAN #20 (2025)!
When it comes to DC’s greatest hero, fans are usually divided into team Superman. But now, even DC’s gods are weighing in, and one powerful remark reveals that the king of all gods views the Dark Knight as being in a league of his own, unmatcheded even by the mighty Man of Steel.
... Wonder Woman’s kindness and goodness made Batman believe in God again...
Tom King and Guillem March's Wonder Woman #20 offers fans a special treat by stepping away from the intense narrative surrounding Diana’s battle with the Sovereign. Instead, the issue revisits one of Wonder Woman and Batman’s past team-ups.
In this story, Diana seeks the World’s Greatest Detective’s help to solve the mystery of Ares' murder, with her mother becoming the prime suspect after the god is found naked and dead in her bed. This investigation leads the duo into encounters with Greek deities, the most notable being Zeus, the king of the gods himself. During their interaction, Zeus reveals that even the gods consider the Dark Knight to be in a league of his own.

As Wonder Woman and Batman approach Zeus, the Greek god greets them with a surprised, “Batman?” clearly taken aback by the Dark Knight's presence. Wonder Woman quickly explains, pointing out that they’re here to solve a mystery, and who better than the World’s Greatest Detective to help with the investigation? As Diana and Zeus begin to discuss the of the investigation, Batman remains silent, observing. However, when Batman finally speaks, it’s to express his surprise that Zeus knows who he is, asking, “You, divinity. You know me?” Zeus responds with an affirmative, stating, “There are men. There are gods. And there is Batman.”
While seemingly simple, this statement from Zeus is incredibly significant. It not only confirms that the Greek gods, who rarely involve themselves in human affairs, recognize Batman on sight, but it also acknowledges that he is far more than just a man or a hero. By saying, “And there is Batman,” Zeus places the Dark Knight in a league of his own, one that doesn’t even include Superman. This recognition speaks volumes about Batman’s unparalleled skill and legendary status in the DC Universe. Furthermore, it’s noteworthy that Zeus lists Batman last, which could suggest that the Dark Knight stands on a higher level, even above the gods themselves.

While it’s beyond epic to see the King of the Gods recognizing Batman as an individual in his own league, someone who transcends being just a man or hero, this issue also subtly reveals who Bruce himself considers to be the greatest hero in the DC Universe. The obvious answer might seem to be Superman, and there’s certainly a strong case for that. However, this issue makes it clear that, in Batman’s eyes, Wonder Woman is DC’s greatest hero.
This becomes evident during their discussion about religion, specifically Bruce’s faith in God. He its that he stopped believing in God after his parents were gunned down in Crime Alley. Yet, he confesses that after meeting and getting to know Diana, he went home and prayed for the first time in decades. The fact that Wonder Woman’s kindness and goodness made Batman believe in God again speaks volumes, clearly indicating that Bruce believes Diana is the best of them all.
