When Robins, he teaches them everything he knows about crime-fighting and trains their bodies and minds so that they can handle the pressures of undertaking life and death situations on a nightly basis. However, when Bruce Wayne takes his final mentee under his wing, it is revealed that Batman never bothered to teach any Robin his greatest skill.
Among the many kids Batman trained to become Robins, from Jason Todd and Tim Drake to even his own biological son Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson stands above the rest as the first Robin to don the suit. Not only was Dick the first of Batman’s Robins, but he was also so skilled that he helped train some of his successors, most notably Damian, proving that he was very involved in the lives of the Bat-Family even after becoming Nightwing. Long after his retirement, Dick came back into the crime-fighting scene when Batman’s true successor, Terry McGinnis was facing a threat he couldn’t hope to defeat alone. In the process, Dick reveals a major shortcoming in Bruce’s training.
In Batman Beyond Vol. 3 #6 by Adam Beechen and Ryan Benjamin, a copycat of the classic Batman villain Hush (who was revealed to be a clone of Dick Grayson) launches a full-strike against Gotham City by arming bombs with enough strength to blow Gotham to smithereens. After suffering a major injury earlier in the series, Terry recruits Dick to help him take down the copycat. During the mission, Dick tells Terry to stay back and wait for his signal before going after Hush, but after only a few moments of Dick taking the lead, Terry jumps into action. When Dick lightly scolds him for not following the plan, Terry tells him he couldn’t help himself and points out that there is no way Dick would have stayed behind if he was in his shoes. To that comment, Dick replies, “No, I guess not. Restraint isn’t something the old man taught any of his kids.”
Before Bruce Wayne became Batman, he studied with the masters of practically every single martial art around the world, becoming the perfect soldier both mentally and physically. Given that he is basically the world’s greatest ninja warrior, one would think that restraint would absolutely be something that Batman would impart on those he was training, but it seems as though that wasn’t the case.
To taught to any of his students, Robin or otherwise.
