- Batman Ninja's commitment to being weird makes it one of the best animated Batman films, despite how divisive it might be.
Batman Ninja is a notably underrated anime Batman anime film from 2018. While the film received some criticism due to its CG animation and its incredibly goofy tone, its positives greatly outweigh its negatives, and it’s easily one of the better DC animated films to come out in recent years.
Batman Ninja deserves far more attention than it’s gotten over the years, and that might finally be happening. Warner Bros. Japan has just revealed that Batman Ninja is getting a sequel film called Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, with the staff and original voice actor for Batman, Koichi Yamadera, set to return, as well.
Further details will be revealed at Anime Expo 2024 during a highlighting both the new film and Suicide Squad ISEKAI, and overall, having a sequel to such an underrated film is nothing but exciting for fans of Batman and of anime in general.
What Will Batman Ninja’s Sequel Film Be About?
Nothing is currently known about Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League beyond its title, but it’s not impossible to guess its plot. The easiest assumption to make about the film is that Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League will see Batman using his ninja skills to fight the yakuza, with plenty of superpowers and advanced technology thrown in the mix. One of the most common types of Batman stories pits him against gangsters and other forms of organized crime, and with the emphasis on the Japanese aesthetic of Batman’s character, that sort of plot would make a lot of sense.
The enemies of the sequel being called the Yakuza League also hints at who could be behind them: the League of Assassins. The League of Assassins are some of Batman’s most dangerous enemies, usually led by the immortal Ras'al Ghul, and have repeatedly ed forces with other villains to defeat Batman, so it might be that Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League will be about Batman fighting the League of Assassins after they forces with the yakuza. Further details about the film are set to be revealed at Anime Expo 2024, but that would still be a great direction for the film to go in, regardless.
Why Batman Ninja Getting a Sequel Is So Exciting
Batman Ninja is an Underrated Gem
As unexpected as Batman Ninja’s sequel might be, there are still plenty of reasons to be excited. While the original film is divisive for a variety of reasons, not only did Kamikaze Douga’s CG create gorgeous and creative visuals, but Batman Ninja’s complete sincerity with its weirdness made its story endearing and all-around fun to watch, much more so than many other animated Batman films. Batman Ninja did far more right than people give it credit for, and hopefully, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League will capitalize on that and give the film the recognition it deserves.
