Before the DC Extended Universe was officially created, Zack Snyder was one of the people responsible for setting it into motion. Snyder's second DC-related film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice expanded the burgeoning universe in several ways, like bridging the gap between that film and Zod's attack on Metropolis, as well introducing several other important metahumans.
Those introductions welcomed Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman via a small but significant role in the film, but they also helped to establish The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg via a series of short cameos. The cameos successfully broadened the DCEU roster in one fell swoop, but the film featured another, more subtle cameo: that of director Zack Snyder himself.
Batman V Superman cinematographer Larry Fong revealed on Twitter (via Comicbook) recently that the film's director actually makes an appearance at one point -- but probably not in the way you might think. As it turns out, Snyder made his BvS appearance as a pair of hands only, filling in for Ben Affleck during a few shots of additional coverage. Fong explains below:
@theLupeXperienc @JaredWayne97 @IMAX Also, it’s Zack’s hands on Bruce’s cell phone in the fight club. Now you know.— Larry Fong (@larryfong) January 1, 2017
The scene Fong is referring to is during one of the scenes where Bruce is investigating Superman and the camera quickly shows a shot of him picking up his cell phone. The hands shown are Snyder's, not Affleck's.
It's not the most conspicuous of director cameos. In fact, the world probably would have gone right on spinning had Fong not revealed the one scene where Snyder's hands fill in for the film's ostensible star. In other words, it's safe to say the director won't be trying to fill Hitchcock's shoes anytime soon.
While the cameo isn't a prominent one, it's also not Snyder's first time appearing in one of his comic-book adaptations. The director also appeared briefly in Justice League finally hits screens next year.
