WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Wonder Woman #20 (2025)!

Wonder Woman. Full disclosure, I was never a WonderBat shipper before this scene, but now, I’m convinced she’s been his true love all along.

Tom King and Guillem March’s Wonder Woman #20 steps away from the series' main narrative involving The Sovereign and revisits one of Diana and Bruce’s past team-ups. In this story, Diana calls on the World’s Greatest Detective to help solve the mystery of Ares’ murder, where her mother, Queen Hippolyta, is the prime suspect.

The issue has faced criticism from fans who took issue with King’s characterization of Wonder Woman and other characters, as well as his focus on Batman. But personally, I absolutely loved it. The unexpected WonderBat content completely took me by surprise and left me wanting more.

It’s True: Wonder Woman Restored Batman’s Belief in God

While investigating Ares’ murder, Wonder Woman and Batman travel to Mount Olympus and interact with various gods. After their conversation with Aphrodite, Bruce is struck by one of Zeus’s lightning bolts. The king of the gods claims the bolt had been stolen from him. Batman survives the strike but ends up bedridden for the rest of the comic, with Diana taking care of him. It is during these moments that fans are treated to a flood of heartfelt WonderBat content. Notably, Bruce brushes off his near-death experience with humor, which Diana playfully teases him about.

Bruce points out that she is not exactly known for being a "barrel of laughs" either. She fires back with, “At least I smile.” He replies, “Clark smiles. You glow.” That line feels straight out of a romance novel. And it only gets better. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Bruce asks if he can tell Diana a secret and brings up their earlier conversation about God. He its that he once believed, but after his parents were murdered, he lost his faith. He could not understand how a loving God would let two kind, good people die.

Bruce then reveals that everything changed when he met Diana. “Then I met you. And you were… kind. Like mother and father come again. Diana… after knowing you… I went home… and looked up… and I prayed.” Diana’s comion and goodness were so profound that they restored Bruce’s lost faith in God. A man who had completely abandoned his belief finding his way back because of one woman is one of the most profoundly romantic concepts ever written. And even if some fans do not read it as romantic, it still speaks volumes about the strength of their bond and the depth of their friendship.

Wonder Woman Is the Romantic Match Batman Truly Deserves

While I will always have respect and love for Batman and Catwoman’s history and romance, I can’t help but feel that Wonder Woman is a better match for Bruce. Batman’s unwavering and uncompromising moral com regarding what he believes is right and wrong has always made the BatCat romance feel doomed to me. That’s why it makes more sense for someone like Batman to be romantically involved with a partner whose values and morals align more closely with his own. Wonder Woman fits that perfectly. On top of that, Diana and Bruce share a friendship and history that would serve as a profoundly strong foundation for an epic romance.

Now is the Perfect Time for a WonderBat Romance

Not to be insensitive, but now that King has killed off Steve Trevor, there’s really nothing stopping DC from pursuing a WonderBat romance. Diana is single, and Bruce and Catwoman clearly aren’t together, especially since he’s currently sleeping with Joe Chill’s daughter, the child of his parents’ murderer. It’s wild that DC will explore such bizarre relationships but still won’t give Bruce and Diana the chance they deserve. It almost feels like DC is willing to try every possible romance for Bruce except Diana. With both characters unattached, there’s no better time for a Wonder Woman and Batman romance to finally happen.
