Warning! Spoilers for Earth-Prime: Batwoman #1

A major Arrowverse.

Recently, DC Comics announced that The CW’s version of the DC Universe would receive a comic book crossover miniseries. Although the previous seasons didn’t include their annual special event, Earth-Prime has promised to fill the void. The comics have also provided series writers with the opportunity to expand on episodes, potentially righting wrongs that haven’t been addressed in episodes. When the most popular Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths seemed to solidify its concluding version of the universe, things quickly began to change. As Black Lightning was announced to be ending, Ruby Rose left the role of Kate Kane AKA Batwoman. However, the all-knowing being known as the Monitor had previously stated in the episode that Kate was considered “the Bat of the future.” Of course, this didn’t pan out as Javicia Leslie soon took over the role as a new character, Ryan Wilder.

The plot hole regarding the Monitor’s lack of foresight is called out in Earth-Prime: Batwoman #1, written by Camrus Johnson, Natalie Abrams, and Kelly Larson with art by Michael Calero and Clayton Henry. In the issue, Lex Luthor’s sister Lena explains, "While Kate may have been a Paragon, they're not needed anymore. Crisis set the universe back to zero to correct itself, and it's clear it wanted you to be the Bat of the Future.” As fans know, Crisis on Infinite Earths came to a conclusion with a new status quo across the multiverse. Apparently, the destined mission of the superhero team throughout Crisis wrapped up their necessary status as active superheroes.

Since the Monitor had been characterized as an omnipotent force, Kate Kane’s exit from her vigilante persona called his insights into question. With this small interaction between Lena and Ryan, the plot hole is conveniently capped off as a non-issue. However, with such a major event, it might have been more fitting for the explanation to be incorporated in an actual episode, rather than the comic book spinoff.

As Crisis changed the overreaching nature of the multiverse, the previously interpreted meaning of the paragons became invalid after the team restored reality. The paragons of the Flash, Black Lightning, and Batwoman among others helped reimplement order, and consequently were no longer needed in the same way they were beforehand. Kate might have been the “Bat of the future” at one point, but now that title belongs to the current Batwoman, Ryan Wilder.
