Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder, who will topline The CW's but she quit Batwoman after season 1, making way for God Friended Me's Leslie.
CW's Batwoman initially featured Ruby Rose as its main heroine Kate Kane. In fact, after Elseworlds, Rose had also appeared in the sixth annual Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earth. During the 2019-2020 season, Rose was shooting Batwoman's 22-episode order when the coronavirus pandemic erupted, ceasing global TV & film production. Due to the outbreak, the show ended its season 1 early, giving Rose time to ponder her stint in the superhero drama. And after some fair contemplation, Rose put down her papers, citing intolerably long-working hours and an injured back as the reasons behind her exit. After Rose's departure, the showrunners decided not to recast the role of Rose's Kate Kane, rather they brought Leslie onboard to play a new character.
During this weekend's DC FanDome, in a special fan question-answer segment, Leslie dished out some details about her new character in Batwoman. The question thrown at Leslie concerned the future of Batwoman and Supergirl's relationship following Kate Kane's disappearance. But Leslie, dodging the main context of the question, gave some details about Ryan Wilder's characterization instead. In her response, Leslie stated that Wilder, in contrast to the affluent businesswoman Kane, is an ordinary street kid. All her life she has looked up to Kane as a lesbian superhero role model, and now, in a twist of fate, she finds herself in Kane's shoes. Leslie also added that her new character would experience a "culture shock" fighting alongside those ''who've already been doing it."
Leslie's statement reinforces Dries' earlier notion about Wilder being divinely different from Kane. Wilder's official Batwoman character description had revealed her to be a free-spirited, undomesticated, errant warrior who was also a drug-runner. While Wilder - like her predecessor - is also a lesbian, she doesn't practice restraint like the former lead. Wilder is athletic, ionate, combative, and crude. She "would steal milk for an alley cat [and] could also kill you with her bare hands." That is to say, in summary, that Leslie's Ryan Wilder is not a traditional All-American superhero, rather she is different and "wildly undisciplined."
Leslie's statement about her character being a street kid reaffirms the fact Batwoman is up for a big swing in season 2. But that honestly is something that fans have known about for quite a while. What is interesting about her new assertion, however, is the way she steered clear of talking about her character's dynamics with Supergirl. Kate Kane's chemistry with Supergirl's Kara Danvers was adored by fans. But now that Kane is no more in the picture, the show's enthusiasts are anxious about how their relationship would be honoured. Since Leslie found that particular morsel too spoilery, it may be that Supergirl might play a part in making Wilder realize her new duties. It is also possible that the famed superhero may mentor the newcomer in Batwoman season 2.
