DC just delivered a brilliantly subtle nod to Marvel’s Beast Boy paying tribute to one of the Green Goliath’s most iconic cinematic moments. This scene is utterly ridiculous in the best way possible and proves that Marvel doesn’t have a monopoly on big, angry, green powerhouses.

In Titans #20 by John Layman and Pete Woods, Raven and Beast Boy take a walk through Central Park as Rachel opens up about her struggles with controlling her empath abilities after fully embracing her darker half—the Dark-Winged Queen.

Their conversation is interrupted when a stray basketball hits Raven in the head, sparking a confrontation between Beast Boy and the men playing nearby. As tensions rise, Beast Boy "Hulks out," transforming into a massive, furious green gorilla. In response, Raven delivers a line that seems to be a clever nod to Hulk’s iconic “I’m always angry” quote from The Avengers (2012).

As Beast Boy and the group of men grow angrier, Raven’s unstable empath abilities begin amplifying their emotions, unintentionally spreading that rage to everyone around them, including ersby. Realizing she needs to calm Beast Boy before the situation escalates into violence, Raven calls out, “You have to Quokka yourself.” At first, the meaning isn’t clear, but then Beast Boy shifts into an adorable, groundhog-like marsupial known as the happiest animal on Earth. The transformation immediately defuses the tension, de-escalating the conflict.

Beyond Beast Boy hulking out as a massive, green gorilla—AKA resembling the Hulk—the Avengers (2012) line, “That’s my secret, Cap: I’m always angry,” may not be immediately obvious. However, both “You have to Quokka yourself” and “I’m always angry” function as anger management techniques for two notoriously green and temperamental characters. This parallel of Beast Boy’s Hulk-like design and the use of a catchphrase tied to emotional control, makes this Titans moment a clever tribute to Marvel’s Green Goliath.

Besides “Hulk, Smash!” Bruce Banner’s “That’s my secret, Cap: I’m always angry” is arguably the Hulk’s most iconic cinematic quote—one so closely tied to the character that even casual fans can recognize it. This raises the question of whether Layman and other DC writers intend to make Raven’s “You have to Quokka yourself” a recurring catchphrase for Beast Boy. While it’s unlikely that his anger management technique will ever reach the same level of cultural recognition as Hulk’s, it remains an undeniably entertaining gag—one that fans would no doubt embrace if it became a staple of Beast Boy’s character.
