Captain Jason Chambers with her culinarily skills. However, her nagging insecurity made her very sensitive to . Tzarina’s confidence grew by the time she returned for season 3, but her clashes with the crew made it clear her sensitivity wasn’t limited to the kitchen.
Most of the turmoil in Below Deck Down Under season 3 centered around Bosun Wihan Du Toit. Wihan’s poor management often left the deck team aimless, with ramifications that seeped over into the interior department. Lara and Wihan butted heads constantly, and during that time, Tzarina gave Lara a ive shoulder to cry on. But after Wihan was fired, there was nothing left to distract Tzarina and Lara from the tension that had been simmering between the pair since even before the season began. With their feud ramping up, Tzarina’s red flags are becoming glaringly obvious.
Tzarina Is Way Too Controlling
She Acts Inflexible & Possessive
Tzarina is an extremely competent chef, but she has a hard time letting go of control. When her plans are derailed by guest requests, she blames her crewmates for these unpredictable situations. In one instance, charter guests asked to change the timing of their breakfast after Tzarina had already prepared it, and she channeled her frustration into anger at Lara for not handling their request properly. Instead of working as a team to find a solution, Tzarina reacted aggressively and refused to adapt.
Lara and Tzarina continued to battle for control over the small details of meal service. Their relationship broke down over a simple request by Lara to change the dinner plates to match the table setting. Tzarina insisted Lara was overstepping and that she had never been asked to change her dishes by a chief stew.
The situation was blown out of proportion and became symbolic of their fight for control rather than simply which plates looked best.
The divide between Lara and Tzarina grew even further when Lara became close to Tzarina’s sous chef, Alesia Harris. Tzarina was sidetracked by her jealousy, especially after Lara gifted Alesia with lipstick she’d been coveting. Tzarina took Lara’s kind gesture as a personal attack and an attempt to steal Alesia away from her. It’s mind-blowing that Tzarina reacted with such outrage over something that made Alesia happy, and it proves that her need to control the kitchen and her team takes precedence over her castmates’ feelings.
Tzarina Doesn't Know How To Delegate
Her Interactions With Anthony & Alesia Are Red Flags
Tzarina was thrilled to have a sous chef at the start of BDDU season 3, but it quickly became apparent that her control issues prevented her from adequately using her sous. She started the season alongside Anthony Bird, but things soured from their first introduction. Tzarina gave Anthony an on-the-spot interview, which made him feel like he had to earn her approval despite already being hired by Captain Jason.
Anthony’s frustration with Tzarina continued when she refused to allow him to help prepare the guests’ food. Instead, Anthony was relegated to crew food and cleaning up after Tzarina. With his confidence shattered and tension rising in the kitchen, Anthony lined up a new job. However, when he told Tzarina, she immediately went straight to Captain Jason. The captain promptly fired Anthony instead of letting him work one final charter.
While Alesia seemed like a much more suitable fit, she and Tzarina weren’t without problems of their own. As Tzarina’s fury towards Lara grew, she took her frustration out on Alesia. She iced Alesia out, causing Alesia to become confused by the lack of direction she was receiving. Much like the situation with Anthony, the tension became unbearable.
Fortunately, Alesia and Tzarina were able to talk through their problems, and Tzarina apologized. But Tzarina’s interactions with both of her sous chefs prove how difficult it is for her to accept help. It seems she prefers taking everything on herself and then complaining about being overworked.
Tzarina Can't Get Along With Anyone
She Has Long-Standing Drama With Lara
Tzarina and Lara had history before they reunited for Below Deck Down Under season 3. The two had worked together on their last ship prior to the Katina. While Tzarina spoke highly of Lara, Lara didn’t seem to share the same enthusiasm. Lara appeared conflicted by Tzarina’s request to room together, which was the first sign that all was not well between the pair.
Drama between the two escalated throughout the season, especially once Wihan was no longer in the villain role.
Tzarina and Lara bickered often, especially when Tzarina felt Lara was interfering with her decision-making process.
During a particularly nasty argument, Tzarina accused Lara of being late, which cut Lara to the core. After Lara became visibly upset, Tzarina itted she had completely made up the claim in an effort to hurt her, which even Alesia thought was savage.
It wasn’t until late in the season that Tzarina and Lara finally revealed their past interactions were much more fraught than they'd let on. Lara alleged Tzarina had been let go from their last boat after angering the captain, saying, “he didn’t like her food, her negativity was overwhelming.” Meanwhile, Tzarina revealed the pair’s previous clash echoed their experiences on the Katina, with Lara stealing her sous chef to do interior work. While Tzarina cited this as her reason for leaving her boat, Lara was one step ahead of her, remarking, “I bet she says she left, one hundred percent.”
Tzarina’s feud with Lara has dominated her storyline, but Tzarina has a pattern of causing friction, especially in the kitchen. She came on too strong with Anthony from the get-go, creating a hostile environment where he felt undervalued. Tzarina and Alesia got off to a much better start, but even they hit a rough patch. It doesn’t seem coincidental that Tzarina and Alesia became more distant as Alesia grew closer to Lara. Tzarina felt betrayed by Lara, and she deflected her hurt toward Alesia.
Tzarina is constantly leaning into the role of a victim, but it’s resulting in her becoming the newest Below Deck Down Under season 3 villain. She seems haunted by her insecurities and unable to decipher between normal interactions and malicious ones. Tzarina finds the negative in every situation, and producers should have anticipated that she would cause huge problems.
Below Deck Down Under airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
