Gary King is one of the most prominent cast on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, but he needs to stay sober to stay on his best behavior and improve his life. The South African First Mate is a skilled professional, but his drinking gets in the way of his relationships and job in such a monumental way that he could mess up his entire life. Captain Glenn Shephard might finally reach his wit's end with Gary on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 after Gary's latest drinking escapade.
Gary's alcohol problem has caused various issues onboard over the years, but the worst allegedly occurred during filming for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. According to former Bravo employee Samantha Suarez, Gary continued to drink heavily during filming for the current installment.
Gary Could Stay On Below Deck Sailing Yacht
He's A Model Yachtie When He's Not Drinking
At this point in the season, Gary's drinking could cause him to lose his job. If Bravo won't fire him, Captain Glenn very well might. The guests in the most recent season insisted the crew go out with them, but Captain Glenn set some parameters. First, not everyone would go out since he wanted to ensure the yacht was still in ship shape the next day. Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher selected herself from the interior crew, which upset entitled Stews Danni Warren and Diana Cruz, especially amid Daisy and Danni's feud.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
Gary, Keith Allen, and Chase Lemacks were the obvious choices to round out the going-out crew given their drag show performance for the charter guests. Captain Glenn allowed these specific crew to go out, but he set their drink limit and two and their curfew at 2 a.m. While the group barely made their 2 a.m. curfew, Captain Glenn was upset to see Gary was pretty drunk.
Gary's alcohol problem is difficult to watch, and his issues were on full display during a recent episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Daisy and Keith also broke the rules, but they were able to fulfill their duties and go to bed at a decent hour. Chase, who only had one drink, was the deck crew hero, making sure everything was ready for the morning. Captain Glenn was disappointed in Daisy and Keith, but he zeroed in on Gary, who lied about having ten drinks. This might finally be the last straw for Captain Glenn, who was very specific about his restrictions for the crew.
Captain Glenn has been a stalwart advocate for Gary. Despite their rocky relationship, Daisy has defended Gary and wants what's best for him. However, when it comes to conduct with guests, Captain Glenn doesn't mess around. Gary broke his rules in favor of drunkenness, even after he said he would stop drinking. It ultimately doesn't look good for his continued employment on the Parsifal III, no matter how good his relationship with Captain Glenn is.
Gary Seemed Like A Better Person When He Wasn't Drinking
Daisy Was Proud Of Him
After a messy night out on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Gary expressed his desire to quit drinking. Daisy was used to Gary making empty promises regarding his sobriety, but she ed him in his endeavors. Gary even took Daisy out one day and expressed his continued interest in a relationship with her. A testament to her intelligence and self-preservation, Daisy turned him down. They have a close and special relationship, but Gary isn't ready to give the 36-year-old Daisy what she needs.
Daisy was right to be reticent because Gary's back to his old antics again. His sobriety only lasted a couple of episodes. In the most recent charter outing that got Gary into trouble, he claimed to have five drinks when he had ten. Additionally, he asserted that two drinks were barely anything to him, a sentence often uttered in some capacity by those with alcohol misuse issues. Gary was irritable and rude to Captain Glenn, claiming he had to drink to please the guests. This didn't fly with Glenn, especially since Chase only had one.
Gary doesn't know how to have fun without alcohol. Instead of staying out with his crew on the night he stayed sober, he went to bed early and socially isolated himself. What Gary needs to understand is that he can go out and socialize without getting blackout drunk. Unfortunately, it's a destructive pattern he's cultivated for years of his yachting career.
Sobriety Could Help Change The Public's View Of Gary
He Needs To Help Himself
Gary isn't a terrible person. He's incredibly skilled as a First Mate, has a great sense of humor, and leads his deck crew with ease and professionalism. He genuinely loves being a yachtie, has a positive working relationship with Captain Glenn, and belongs on the high seas. Gary hasn't always been a perfect friend to Daisy, but he genuinely cares about her. He lives to serve the guests and usually keeps a positive attitude.

As Daisy has said in the past, Gary becomes a different person when he's drinking. He suddenly becomes much more sexual and makes unwise romantic decisions. Gary also gets messy, as seen in his accident with Chief Engineer Davide Morosi, which resulted in blood on the white couch. He easily gets jealous of Daisy's romantic escapades with other crew , including former Chief Engineer Colin MacRae and current Deckhand Keith.
Any negative discourse regarding Gary is almost always connected with his drinking issues. When Gary is sober, he's entertaining, charming, and deserving of reality TV and professional recognition. However, when he gets drunk, Gary hurts everyone around him. He refused to acknowledge his alleged actions against Samantha or apologize to the women with whom he's slept with and then discarded on Below Deck Sailing Yacht when he was drunk. It's hard to watch him self-destruct, but he needs to get it together for the safety of his fellow crew and himself.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
