It Takes Two was seen by many as one of the best games of 2021 and as well as being available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and recently ing GeForce's cloud gaming service. Its ability to tell a mature story of love while incorporating fun gameplay mechanics for cooperation with other players was enough to see it offer something new for gamers
But that doesn't mean that there are other games like it that fans might be interested to pick up and play. From their own fun ways of using co-op to featuring mature stories that everyone involved will surely love, there are some great games out that are worth picking up for fans of It Takes Two.
Untitled Goose Game
Originally released as a single-player experience, Untitled Goose Game received a free update that could give the player and a friend a chance to play the game together. Playing as two honking geese, the players must complete challenges by causing chaos and tricking the residents of a small village.
While the story isn't the strongest compared to other games, its sense of humor and experimentation with co-op is an easy recommendation for those that loved It Takes Two. Being available on most consoles, anyone can play this indy darling.
A Way Out
Before Hazelight Studios created their beloved rom-com game, their first foray into the games industry was with A Way Out. Set within a prison in the 1970s, two prisoners attempt to escape by working together and having each other's backs.
The split-screen cop-op game stood out when it was released in 2018 for its unique focus on multiplayer that not also saw it as one of the best co-op games for Xbox Series X, but also won some awards too. It would also become the foundation of what its predecessor would build on and shape it into the celebrated title it is today.
Portal 2
Portal 2 is still regarded by many as one of Valve's best games and it's easy to see why. Improving upon the puzzle mechanics from the first game, it included a lengthy single-player campaign filled with humor and great voice acting from Stephen Merchant.
But it also had a multiplayer campaign that proved to be just as fun. With puzzles focusing on teamwork, these challenges proved to be rewarding to complete as they encouraged a group effort. And its recent release on the Switch means that players can now take it on the go while traveling with their friends or family.
Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons
Before he would create the celebrated games at Hazelight Studios, Josef Fares created Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, a short but emotional game. The story is set in a fantastical world where two brothers must explore the land to find a cure for their father's illness.
Its original release saw the player use the control sticks to move each of the brothers, but the Switch version introduced co-op into this 2013 title. With a friend now able to control each brother, two people can go on this beautiful and heartfelt journey together without having to share one controller.
The Trine Series
Since the first game was released in 2009, Trine has become a fun and artistic adventure through a fantasy world. Whether you play alone or in multiplayer mode, the games see a band of three heroes who must use their unique skills in order to traverse the dangerous land.
Similar to how Cody and May would use their unique skills in certain puzzles, the Trine games would encourage the players to use each character's abilities to tackle obstacles and defeat enemies. Gamers may be able to play this in a single-player mode, but it's not quite as fun as playing with friends.
Cuphead
Taking place in Inkwell Isle, Cuphead and Mugman must defeat a series of difficult bosses to save their souls from the Devil. Since its release, the game has been a hit and with the recent inclusion of the Delicious Last Course as well as the Netflix animated series, so it shows no signs of going anywhere anytime soon.
This may prove to be a hard game for some, but this is a visually unique game that fans of It Takes Two might enjoy with the ability to play as Cuphead, Mugman, and Ms. Chalice. And with different strategies for each boss, it's also an enjoyable effort when two players are able to beat some of the best boss fights in Cuphead.
Don't Stave Together
After their work on the Shank games and Mark of the Ninja, Klei Entertainment developed Don't Starve for PCs in 2013. It was eventually ported to a variety of consoles and the game would spawn a sequel known as Don't Starve Together.
Introducing multiplayer into the survival game, up to six players could in on the fun and try to survive, build shelters, and fight intimidating monsters. With a stylish look and a fun co-op experience, it's certainly one that might just offer something new for those that enjoy a large variety of multiplayer experiences.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Released earlier this year, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga packed all nine movies into one game. And with the trademark humor that the LEGO games have been known for and a colorful and lighthearted take on these classic movies for everyone to enjoy, this is certainly set to be one of the best games of 2022.
While most of the LEGO games currently available on current consoles include multiplayer, this particular title took it to the next level by introducing some new features not found in other LEGO Star Wars games that freshened up the experience. By combining its humor and approachable gameplay, this is an easy recommendation for fans of It Takes Two.
Overcooked! All You Can Eat
Overcooked and Overcooked 2 were chaotically fun co-op games when they were originally released on consoles. The cooking simulator saw up to four chefs trying to cook the perfect dishes while rooms twisted and rats tried to steal the ingredients.
While both games are available for most consoles, Overcooked! All You Can Eat blended the two titles together and were remastered with additional content. With smoother and improved visuals for 4K consoles, it's the ideal multiplayer package as well as one of the best-ranked Nintendo Switch party games.
Unravel 2
Following on from the first game, Unravel Two saw a couple of Yarnys journeying across the land to find a mysterious spark. Upon release, the game enjoyed positive reviews and even won Family Game of the Year at the 2019 D.I.C.E. Awards.
While players are only able to play the game in local co-op, it offers plenty of fun for two players during the adventure of these two adorable beings. Featuring challenging puzzles, gorgeous visuals, and an emotional story, this will be an ideal game for fans of It Takes Two.
