The Flying-type is extremely plentiful in the Pokémon franchise, and it often functions as one part of a dual-type combination. The inclusion of the Flying-type can offer some great benefits, including immunity to Ground-type attacks and resistance to Bug, Grass, and Fighting.
The Flying-type can also, however, have its downsides with vulnerabilities to Ice, Electric, and Rock attacks. When it is present on a powerful Pokémon though, this type can be a valuable asset. The best dual-type Flying Pokémon can offer great coverage in battle and make an excellent addition to a playthrough team. Some of the strongest are only obtainable in specific games, but if trainers can acquire them, they will gain a huge advantage.
Lugia
Lugia can take a significant amount of damage during its time in battle. It has a fantastic Defense stat and exceptional Special Defense, which, along with its viable HP stat, make it a tank against both categories of damage. In addition to this, its Hidden Ability, Multiscale, halves the damage it takes from attacks when it is at its maximum health.
Along with this, Lugia is fast and has decent offensive stats, so it can be intimidating in that department as well. In the anime series and movies, Lugia uses its strength to help people, which also makes it one of the most heroic Pokémon in the franchise.
Yveltal
Even if opponents have a typing that is strong against Yveltal, it is still often challenging to take it out. This difficulty is because of the Legendary's fantastic HP and viable defensive stats. With no extreme vulnerabilities, Yveltal is decently covered in the defensive department.
Offensively, Yveltal has excellent stat values in both its Attack and Special Attack, so it can devastate Pokémon that specialize in either defensive category. Furthermore, its signature Ability, Dark Aura, boosts the power of Dark-type moves of all Pokémon on the field, making its blows of this type even more destructive.
Mega Charizard Y
Between Charizard's two Mega Evolutions, Mega Charizard Y is generally not as popular as X, partly because the former is considered by many to be one of the worst designed Mega Evolutions. This does not reflect properly on its strength though, which is immense.
Mega Charizard Y's Special Attack is massive, and with a more than decent Speed stat, it can act before a number of opponents. However, it cannot do so consistently. While its Special Defense is high enough to withstand a decent amount of damage, its Defense is less capable, which can leave it vulnerable. But when it can unleash its power, Mega Charizard Y can be a terrifying force.
Landorus (Therian Forme)
Both the Incarnate Forme and the Therian Forme of Landorus have their strengths, but the highly increased value placed in the latter's Attack stat makes it more desirable. This stat allows Landorus to demolish many opponents with one strike, and because of its relatively high Speed stat, it can often do so before its enemy can make a single move.
Defensively, it is not the most impressive, but its bulk usually allows it to take a hit or two before going down. In addition, Landorus only has two weaknesses: Water and Ice, which further helps it defensively, though the Pokémon has an extreme vulnerability to the latter.
Mega Salamence
Before Mega Evolving, Salamence is already an incredibly strong pseudo-Legendary. But in its new form, it can be nearly unstoppable at times. The Pokémon's massive Attack stat can eliminate an opponent in one swift blow, and its fantastic Speed stat lets it do this before most enemies can do anything at all.
When Mega Salamence needs to defend, it can also shine against Physical damage thanks to its incredible Defense stat. It has more trouble against Special attackers, though, especially if its opponents use Ice moves, to which Salamence has an extreme vulnerability. However, the Pokémon rarely needs to worry about defending, relying on being an offensive powerhouse instead.
Dragonite
One of the best of all pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, Dragonite has been a dominant competitor since Generation I. It is well-rounded with relatively high stats in every department, except for its Speed, which is slightly lower but still reasonable. The other stat that is not like the others is its Attack stat, which is fantastic.
When Dragonite does not out-speed its opponents, as long as it can survive one hit, it can do devastating damage with its turn. It usually has this opportunity because of its viable, though not exceptional, bulk. Also, like Lugia, Dragonite has access to Multiscale as a Hidden Ability, which helps it further.
Mega Pinsir
Mega Pinsir is perhaps better known for its terrifying appearance than for its battling capabilities, but the Pokémon has the strength to sweep through many enemy teams. Gaining a secondary type of Flying upon Mega Evolving, this form of Pinsir also gains the Ability Aerilate, which turns all its Normal-type moves into Flying-type moves and gives them a boost in strength.
This Ability gives the Pokémon some stellar options in its move pool. Along with this, Mega Pinsir's Attack stat is monstrous, and with its high Speed, it can act before a large number of its opponents. Mega Pinsir struggles a bit defensively, especially when it comes to Special damage, but its strengths make it well worth it.
Celesteela
The Steel/Flying-type Ultra Beast Celesteela is not the fastest Pokémon around, but its other stats help it to cope. Its Physical and Special Attack and Defense all have similarly high stat values, with slightly more emphasis on its Special Attack. While its thoroughly well-rounded nature may initially seem as though it makes the Pokémon unable to excel in any one area, Celesteela benefits heavily from its Ability.
Beast Boost raises an Ultra Beast's highest stat when it knocks out another Pokémon, which, in Celesteela's case, is its Special Attack. Because of its capable defensive stats and its typing, which only gives it two type weaknesses, Celesteela can last for a long time in battle, defeating enemies and gaining buffs to its Special Attack, which make it even deadlier.
Ho-Oh
As perhaps the strongest among the Johto Legendaries and Mythicals, Ho-Oh stands tall among its fellow dual-type Flying Pokémon. Its weakest feature is its Defense, but even this is manageable because of its high HP stat. On the Special side, it excels defensively and can take an extensive amount of damage before going down.
Ho-Oh is sometimes, though not always, faster than opponents, and its fantastic Attack stat should terrify enemies. The Legendary gains a further advantage through its Hidden Ability, Regenerator, which restores a third of its health when it switches out of battle.
Mega Rayquaza
Though Rayquaza does not need a Mega Evolution to be powerful, it nevertheless received one and became one of the most dominant forces in the franchise. Tied with both forms of Mega Mewtwo for the highest base stat total of any usable Pokémon, Mega Rayquaza has absurdly high stat values in both its Attack and Special Attack, and its Speed is high enough to let it move before a majority of opponents.
With capable, though not incredible, bulk, Mega Rayquaza can take a solid amount of damage. Furthermore, its Ability, Delta Stream, neutralizes types that would otherwise be super-effective against Flying. Thus eliminating Mega Rayquaza's weakness to Rock, making Ice a standard type weakness as opposed to an extreme vulnerability, and turning Electric into a resistance instead of a neutral type.
