Since the early 1900's, monsters have been portrayed on the silver screen to entertain and to terrify. The classic monsters have lived on, have been re-made and re-imagined, while throughout the years, new and original monsters have risen and haunted the nightmares of horror fans just the same. Babadook (Movie: The Babadook, 2014)
If fans have seen The Babadook, they probably still the ominous jingle and the creature that appeared in every shadow and in the famous pop-up book. Australian director Jennifer Kent reimagined a small family's grief after they lost their husband and father.
Based on her short-story "Monster", The Babadook portrays a different side of tough emotions and how the struggle to get through them isn't an easy journey. The iconic monster that wears a black top hat will be ed as terrifyingly perfect.
It (Movie: It, 2017)
Re-imagining an iconic character that has stayed with people from the early 90's is not only rebellious, but a thin line to walk on, as well. The famous character of Pennywise (originally played by It was smart, creepy and the cast was spot-on, especially Pennywise himself.
Krampus (Movie: Krampus, 2015)
Krampus is a folklore figure, which makes him seem less harmless because he's meant to scare children into being good; but he's much more sinister than fans thought. When this character began appearing on the big screen, people started paying attention to it and categorizing him in with other movie monsters. In the 2015 adaptation of Krampus, the film is jam-packed with monsters, which makes Krampus himself much more terrifying as he takes on the look of Santa Claus, but in a more morbid appearance.
Modor (Movie: The Ritual, 2017)
The Ritual premiered as a Netflix Original and was based on the novel by Adam Nevill. It starts out with four friends taking a hiking trip in remembrance of their friend that ed away. They decide on taking an "easier" route through the woods and run into a a sinister pagan community that doesn't welcome outsiders with friendly conversation.
The actual monster they worship is a mix of creatures that's called Jötunn, the bastard of Loki. It's scary and it's a different take on what usually lurks in the woods.
The It (Movie: It Follows, 2014)
From time to time, movie monsters take on different forms and sometimes, it can be a neighbor or co-worker. It Follows is a new take on the horror genre, as its "monster" is a person that contracts a sexual disease from someone else and has to be ed on.
The dread and the way "It" follows people around is enough to get goosebumps and to that human beings can be terrible monsters, too.
Fornicus, Lord Of Bondage And Pain (Movie: Cabin In The Woods, 2011)
In 2011, Cabin in the Woods splashed onto the screen and never left. It took the obviously scenes and characters horror fans already know and spun it on its head to tell a darker story. At the same time, there was plentiful comedic relief, as well.
Halfway through the movie, the audience gets to see the monsters that wait to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting cabin dwellers and Fornicus is one of them. He doesn't speak, but his persona and looks speak volumes. The blackness in his eyes tell a story and sometimes, saying nothing is more terrifying than anything else.
The Tethered (Movie: Us, 2019)
After the success of "The Tethered". They are the unsuspecting family, just angrier and sick of being in the shadows.
From their outfits, the guttural conversation and movements, they're just as scary as any over movie monster out there.
Mer-Man (Movie: A Cabin In The Woods, 2011)
It's not a surprise that another monster from Cabin in the Woods is on this list, because every single character was portrayed perfectly. At first the Merman monster started out as a joke, but once everything blew up in the technicians' faces, it was clear it wasn't just any ordinary sea-dweller.
Imagine coming face-to-face with this horrifying creature in any setting, let alone the water.
The Nun (Movie: Nun, 2018)
It all started with The Conjuring 2, that directors just knew it'd do well on its own. Horror fans might debate on the actual scariness the film portrayed, but nonetheless, this movie monster was nightmare fuel. From classic jump scares, to the amazing special effects, this demon nun will probably go down in history as one of the best.
Lipstick-Face Demon (Movie: Insidious, 2010)
In 2010, the horror industry was introduced to The Conjuring became a hit, the story of a little boy that could astral project in his dreams was a thing of nightmares. The main monster that tried to take him was the Lipstick Demon and from the eery music to his presence, he was absolutely once of the best monsters Wan came out with. Fans didn't see a lot of him until the middle/end of the film, but he made his mark all the same.
