The year 2018 was a great one for film. Hit movies released that year represented the culmination of years of a franchise, highly anticipated horror films, etc. There was rarely a moment throughout 2018 in which viewers could not find a fantastic movie to see in theaters.
If audiences are wondering what the best movies of the year are, though, the site Ranker has compiled a collection of some of the most popular and highly regarded films from 2018, voted on by the site's s. Since they were released just a few years ago, movie fans may have missed some of them, but now is a great time to go back and watch these films that are considered the best movies of 2018.
Ready Player One
Considered by many to be among Ready Player One is about a future in which much of the population spends most of their time in a virtual reality space. The creator of this digital world promises a grand prize to the player who can find a secret easter egg hidden in the landscape.
Featuring an expansive list of pop culture references, Ready Player One is a dream for fans of nostalgic properties. With fascinating visuals that blend various aspects of classic films and video games, this movie is a fun and action-packed adventure.
A Star Is Born
A Star Is Born is the fourth film iteration of the story, though aspects of it have changed with time. The film follows the characters of Ally, a talented but unknown singer, and Jackson, a famous musician. The two begin to fall in love and Ally's career takes off while Jackson grapples with his career's decline, as well as the effects his alcoholism is having on his life and relationships.
The performances, both acting and musical, are incredible, giving this film one of the best soundtracks of the year as well as some heartfelt and genuine dramatic moments. The roles of all involved have been praised, and as a result, Lady Gaga became much more widely recognized as a capable actor.
Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
Though it did not have the highest opening weekend Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the most beloved. It explores the character of Miles Morales, who, after being bitten by a spider and gaining superpowers, teams up with Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and several others from alternate universes to stop villains from destroying New York City.
The film's animation style is unique, creating an exciting experience that features the talents of some incredible voice actors. The characters and storylines are also engrossing, funny, heartwarming, and heartbreaking in effective ways.
Black Panther
Starring Chadwick Boseman as the titular superhero, Black Panther follows T'Challa, now the king of Wakanda, as he tracks down Ulysses Klaue, a black-market arms dealer who has been dealing in stolen vibranium from Wakanda. T'Challa also faces the challenge presented by his cousin that threatens his throne and life.
The film is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and very well written. The late Chadwick Boseman's performance, especially, has received extensive recognition, providing a thoughtful and gripping portrayal of the titular superhero.
Incredibles 2
Taking place directly after the events of the first film, which is one of Pixar's most beloved movies, Incredibles 2 centers on the Parr family as they navigate life as superpowered people. When Helen receives an offer to be a part of a program to improve public perception of superheroes, Bob adjusts to life taking care of the children mostly by himself, for which he is ill-prepared. This is unlike the first film, in which Bob was often away on a mission while Helen took care of the rest of the family.
A new villain begins to present dangers, forcing the entire Parr family to enter the action once again. Featuring much of the action and sincere relationships that the first film is known for, this sequel follows through in its presentation. Though generally not considered as iconic as the first film, Incredibles 2 offers an addition that is faithful to the comedy and heart that is present in the original.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
As perhaps the Mission: Impossible - Fallout is full of stunts, espionage, and all the rest of the best Tom Cruise high jinks. The film follows Ethan Hunt and the rest of the Impossible Mission Force as they track down stolen plutonium before a terrorist group can use it for terrible purposes.
With twists and turns around every corner of the story, Fallout lives up to its franchise's reputation in all the best ways. The action scenes are incredibly well done, and with a thrilling plot and great performances, the film is one of the best in the series.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody follows the life of Freddie Mercury, the legendary vocalist of the band Queen. Starring Rami Malek as the iconic singer, the story takes viewers through Queen's beginnings, rise to stardom, and writing of classic pop songs, mainly from the perspective of Freddie Mercury. The movie also chronicles some of his personal hardships and joys.
Though some have criticized the less accurate portions of the film, it is still regarded as a beautiful ode to Mercury. Rami Malek, specifically, has received extensive praise for his portrayal, showing much of the man's personality in a heartfelt performance.
Deadpool 2
After Wade Wilson experiences a tragedy, he finds himself working alongside some of the X-Men to stop the conflict between a young mutant named Russell Collins and the authorities. After both Wade and Russell are sent to a secure prison, a time-traveling mutant named Cable attempts to kill Russell to prevent future events.
Despite the often raunchy subject matter present in the movie, Deadpool 2 is surprisingly heartwarming, at times. The second film in the series follows up on the original very well, providing many comedic moments and great performances from actors like Ryan Reynolds, Zazie Beetz, and Josh Brolin.
A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place shows the audience a world that has been overrun by creatures that respond to sound. As such, the main characters must remain silent or risk attracting their attention, all while attempting to survive in the post-apocalyptic landscape. Because much of the movie exists in relative silence, the moments in which loud noises are made are much more effective.
Suspenseful moments are excellently done, making the viewers know that any sound could spell immediate disaster. The film has one of the best horror movie premises from the 2010s, and based on how popular A Quiet Place was at the time of its release, it appears that audiences were also aware of how special it was.
Avengers: Infinity War
The culmination of all of the MCU movies that came before it, Avengers: Infinity War successfully executes the massive undertaking of squeezing almost every MCU superhero into one movie and doing so effectively. The film follows the heroes as they try to stop Thanos from acquiring the remainder of the Infinity Stones to eliminate half of all life in the universe.
Despite the expansive roster of characters in the movie, Infinity War gives them all a reasonable amount to do, allowing fans to experience many of their favorite figures working together in an exhilarating cinematic experience.
