Sony still has possession of all Spider-Man-related movies, outside of the main character's journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2022, Sony finally released its second comic book franchise in this world, with Venom for the studio. While Venom was popular with fans, Morbius is not getting the same praise.
However, for fans who liked the new Marvel superhero movie, and even for those who wished it was better, there are plenty of movies that share traits with the vampire antihero. These include movies based in the world of comic books, those about vampires in general, and some starring of the cast.
Venom (2018) - Streaming On Starz
The first movie that fans of Morbius should check out is Venom. This was the first movie that Sony created in its Spider-Man world outside of its versions of the main character. In the film, Eddie Brock found himself attached to the symbiote Venom before he ended up fighting other symbiote-possessed people, with Riot as his main villain.
A second movie arrived in 2021 where Venom battled Carnage. Morbius was supposed to come out between the two Venom movies, and he even mentioned his fellow Sony Marvel character in the movie.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - Available To Rent
Not only was Morbius supposed to come out in between the two Venom movies, but it was also supposed to be out before Spider-Man: No Way Home. There were a few Easter eggs in the Morbius trailer that indicated the movie was based in the same world as both Venom and Tom Holland's Spider-Man.
However, Morbius ended up delayed for so long that it came out after the MCU Spider-Man movie and editing forced Sony to remove some of the scenes and replace them to fit the new narrative. However, for fans of the character of Morbius from the comics, Spider-Man: No Way Home remains one of Marvel's best movies.
Blade (1998) - Streaming On Netflix
Blade is coming to the MCU with Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali in the lead role. It will take a lot to match up to the love for the original Blade movie, though. Wesley Snipes starred as the daywalker who killed vampires every chance he gets.
There were three movies in the franchise, with the second a great one by Guillermo del Toro and the third ending the franchise on a down note. In Marvel Comics, Blade and Morbius are both part of the dark horror-driven part of the universe and Blade is the better-reviewed movie, by far.
Daybreakers (2009) - Streaming On Fubo And DirecTV
Ethan Hawke just ed the MCU in Daybreakers.
The movie took an interesting angle on the idea of vampires because it took place after vampires had already conquered the world. They set up their own food banks, using humans as cattle for their survival. Hawke played a human, vampire hunter who set out to bring the new ruling class down.
An American Werewolf In London (1981) - Streaming On Peacock
In An American Werewolf in London, two hitchhikers were crossing Europe when a werewolf attacked them. One died and the other slowly began to realize he was becoming a werewolf. While Morbius is a vampire, his introduction in Marvel Comics connected him with Lizard.
Morbius and Lizard were both good men who changed into monstrous creatures, bringing more memories of the classic Wolf-Man movies than Dracula. For fans who enjoy these movies, An American Werewolf in London remains one of the best werewolf movies ever made.
Underworld (2003) - Streaming On Fubo And DirecTV
In 2003, Len Wiseman directed the movie Underworld, which took place in a society where werewolves and vampires lived in a constant state of war. Kate Beckinsale starred as a Death Dealer, a vampire tasked with hunting down and killing werewolves.
What made this entire franchise so interesting was that neither werewolves nor vampires were the bad guys, but both were evil but also had good . When vampire-werewolf hybrids were created, they brought danger to both species and the world in general.
Mr. Nobody (2009) - Streaming On Roku
For fans who loved Jared Leto in Morbius, one of the best movies he ever starred in was the underrated cult film Mr. Nobody. In the movie, Leto is the last name on Earth and he recounts his life story to a reporter. He is 118-years-old and re three important moments in his life.
The movie is told in a nonlinear format, and the movie can get confusing as the movie changes things in his life to make it seem like he lived in alternate timelines. The movie is a philosophical story that is pure sci-fi and one of Leto's most spectacular performances.
The Crow (1994) - Streaming On Paramount+
For fans of Morbius that want to see a dark comic book-inspired movie, The Crow remains a true classic. Released in 1994, based on the book by James O'Barr, the movie tells the story of a man and woman killed on Devil's Night. A crow then bonds with the man, Eric Draven, and brings him back from the dead to find vengeance.
The movie had sequels that were never up to the level of the original movie. Brandon Lee starred as Draven and the movie remains a cult classic and one of the best grunge rock comic book horror movies ever made.
Constantine (2005) - Streaming On Tubi
While the movie was dismissed by both critics and fans upon its release, many have reappraised Constantine and there is a good chance if the movie were released today, it would have a better reputation. Keanu Reeves stars as John Constantine, a demon hunting master of the occult.
The biggest problem fans had with the movie was that Reeves did not fit the look of the Constantine from the comics, something fixed when Matt Ryan took on the role a decade later. However, the story was solid, the horror on target, and it remains an underappreciated comic book adaptation.
Spawn (1997) - Streaming On Netflix
In 1997, Todd McFarlane's most popular Image Comics creation came to the big screen in Spawn. The movie was a minor success but was bashed critically. However, the horror comic movie was much better than critics and audiences gave it credit for at the time.
The story followed a CIA agent betrayed by his own country, murdered, and sent to Hell. However, he made a deal with the devil and returned as a Hellspawn. However, the catch was that if he used up his powers, he would return to Hell. It is now considered a cult classic.
