In Bosch: Legacy, Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch is taking on a very different place in the world, as he quit the LAPD and now works as a private detective. After seven seasons on Amazon Prime Video, the streamer canceled the original series in 2021 after Harry resigned from the LAPD when he grew disenchanted with the politics surrounding the department. Bosch: Legacy debuted just one year later.

Set nearly a decade after the finale's events, Dexter seems to have finally attained peace as he leads a secret life in a small town. However, when his son returns, his homicidal urges start coming back to him. The chaos that ensues forms the remainder of the plot.

Spin-offs can be risky, especially if they spawn from heavily popular dramas, as fans always fear comparing the new show with the original. Still, Dexter: New Blood managed to garner positive responses, much like Bosch: Legacy. The murder of a teenage girl rocks a sleepy town, and local detective Mare Sheehan will do whatever it takes to solve the mystery. In Mare of Easttown, Mare Sheehan was a small-town hero as a high school basketball player. However, as a detective, she has yet to solve an old missing person's case, and when a second one comes up, she grows more and more obsessive. Mare must also deal with her inner demons. And if it weren't enough, a rebellious daughter is another one of her responsibilities.

Even though Maddie Bosch is all grown up as an LAPD officer in Legacy, her father still has some parental concerns even while working alongside her.

Hence, TV shows like Mare of Easttown and Bosch: Legacy show the emotional costs of being in a profession like law enforcement. The two shows also raise the stakes to unbearable levels. In Easttown, beloved characters are murdered, and in Bosch: Legacy, Harry has to find his daughter, who was buried alive, before it is too late.

6 Archive 81 (2022)

A Video Archivist Gets Involved With A Deadly Mystery

Archive 81 starts with a young archivist named Dan, who is hired by a mysterious millionaire for an equally mysterious restoration project. What was supposed to be an ordinary job of restoring some tapes turns into a larger adventure as Dan starts encountering paranormal phenomena through these tapes. Soon, Dan realizes there is a disappearance and a secret cult that he is discovering as he pieces the footage on the 22-year-old tapes together.

Despite the otherworldly nature of the storyline, Archive 81 does include Martin Donovan's Virgil Davenport as a significant character. His character hires Mamoudou Athie's Dan Turner in the first place. Bosch: Legacy similarly starts with William Devane's Whitney Vance using the services of Bosch to find if he has an heir for his multi-million-dollar business. In both cases, the leads subsequently unearth larger conspiracies that neither of them ever expected to come across.

5 Mayans M.C. (2018-2023)

The Sons Of Anarchy Spin-Off Series

The daily affairs of the titular outlaw biker gang form the premise of Mayans M.C., a show that spurns out of stories of the characters from FX's Sons of Anarchy. After Jax's story ended the Sons of Anarchy storylines, this spin-off series focuses on an entirely different biker gang, set hundreds of miles away from the original show's setting and focusing on the Sons' rivals-turned-allies. It shared the DNA, even without the same characters returning.

Carrying on the stylish and violent vigilantism of the original, Mayans M.C. is a worthy spin-off that shines with its own characters. Both internal and external conflicts of the gang make for engaging entertainment. If viewers need a spin-off that is set years after its predecessor and still retains the original's charm, then Mayans M.C. can be quite a proficient companion piece to Bosch: Legacy. The big difference is that Bosch: Legacy continued one man's story, and Mayans took a very different turn.

4 Ray Donovan (2013-2020)

A Fixer Finds Problems With His Dad Is Released From Prison

In one of Liev Schreiber's best roles, he plays a Hollywood "fixer" named Ray Donovan who handles illegal activities for a legal firm and his fancy celebrity clients. His dirty work includes everything from pay-offs to cleaning up crime scenes. Despite Donovan being on the wrong side of the law, the show actually plays out in the style of a crime procedural show, complete with dysfunctional family popping up and the protagonist dealing with self-control over his personal demons.

Such aspects of Ray Donovan make it a perfect watch for fans of Bosch: Legacy. Both Harry Bosch and Ray Donovan are meticulous in their actions, but both have inner turmoil that causes them to often lash out and make mistakes along the way. They are also both fathers who want nothing more than to protect their daughters, but in both cases, they realize that is something they don't always have control over. Ray Donovan ended after seven seasons, the same as the original Bosch series.

3 Monk (2002-2009)

A Private Detective With Impeccable Skills Of Observation

Adrian Monk is a gifted detective who formerly worked for the San Francisco Police Department as a brilliant homicide detective. However, he ended up leaving the force after his wife's murder exacerbated his OCD to the point where he could no longer function alongside other police officers. However, he ends up called in to help as a consultant on cases that the police are struggling with, and his keen sense of observation allows him to find clues that other officers seem to miss.

Unlike other police procedural shows, Monk also acts as a dramedy TV series in its exploration of Tony Shalhoub's lead character. As Bosch: Legacy also finds Harry Bosch leaving the police force and investigating independently, there is a common tonality between Bosch and Monk. Both men have had a glorious past and are now just trying to continue their diligent work despite the frustration that comes their way. The big difference is that Monk is by-the-book and Bosch will cross the line when needed.

2 Luther (2010-2019)

A Police Detective Whose Violent Nature Led To His Downfall

In this British crime series, Idris Elba's John Luther is a detective determined to use his intelligence and ion to solve cases. However, his obsessive nature can lead to violent tendencies, which are then balanced by an unlikely ally in Alice Morgan. Played by Ruth Wilson, Alice is a murderer who outwits Luther. With a Sherlock/Moriarty-like relationship, both strike a partnership as the killer helps the detective to solve some of his most perplexing cases.

The two shows also feature police officers who are set to do the right thing, but in both cases, they become disillusioned.

Even though Harry Bosch relies on his LAPD detective daughter Maddie and civil rights attorney Honey Chandler, Luther is an interesting antithesis to this formula. Instead of collaborating with like-minded law enforcers, Luther goes to extreme lengths, such as befriending the enemy herself. The two shows also feature police officers who are set to do the right thing, but in both cases, they become disillusioned. For Bosch, it meant quitting. For Luther, it meant going to jail himself.

1 Broadchurch (2013-2017)

Detectives In A Small British Town

Starring Olivia Colman and David Tenant as detectives in the fictional British town of Broadchurch, the show deals with full-season cases and how their intersecting timelines impact their mental state. As the town seethes with mutual suspicion and a media circus, the detectives have a lot of chaos on their hands. The first season is about the murder of an 11-year-old boy, the second is about bringing the killer to justice while a case from the past returns, and the third is about the rape of a local woman.

Much like Bosch: Legacy, the storylines run throughout the season and come back to haunt the detectives in the subsequent seasons, showing that the deadlier the crimes, the more it weighs down the detectives working the cases. Broadchurch's psychological focus and the usual procedural tropes make it quite an engaging watch. And with just 24 episodes, it is also a binge-able option for fans of a fast-paced crime thriller like Bosch: Legacy.
