Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between the art of bad and bad art, as directors like Robert Rodriguez and John Waters spin kitsch concepts into something fascinating. And on the other hand, there are movies that are made with such sincerity but end up being like The Room.
But, just because a movie is bad doesn't always mean it's unwatchable. "So bad it's good movies" are often more fun and entertaining to watch than genuinely great movies. Whether it's the dialogue, the nonsensical plots, the performances, or all of the above, Reddit thinks these are the best worst movies ever. From a horror flick released just last month to a world-famous movie that is revered for how badly made it is, there's still value in these unintentionally funny movies.
Updated on September 12th, 2022 by Colin McCormick: Sylvester Stallone's new superhero movie Samaritan has earned an overwhelmingly negative response from critics. But just because a movie might not be great in quality doesn't mean it cannot still be enjoyable. Fans on Reddit have taken a look at even more movies that are certainly bad but in a way that makes them a lot of fun to watch. From blockbuster misfires to misguided family movies, these movies can still provide some laughs, even if that wasn't the original intention.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
- Available on Peacock, Peacock and AMC+
A big-budget adventure movie pitting Egyptian gods against each other in an epic battle sounds quite promising, but Gods of Egypt was a sillier movie than fans expected. The story follows a young mortal who teams up with the dog Horus to unseat the god of darkness, Set, from his throne.
With questionable casting choices and wonky CGI, it was hard for fans to take the movie as a grand adventure. But MynameIsJudge found that there was a lot of charm and fun to be had with all its faults, itting that the movie "was horrible but it was definitely not boring."
Street Fighter (1994)
- Available to rent on Apple TV
Video game movies never received much love from critics over the years and Street Fighter was no different. The loose adaptation of the fighting game brought together so many of its popular characters in a messy and incoherent story.
There are a number of goofy performances in the movie, including Jean-Claude Van Damme as the heroic lead and the movie feels like it is on the verge of being a comedy but never quite makes the transition. But Redditor omarcoming9439 said they "found that movie incredibly entertaining for what its worth."
Anaconda (1997)
- Available on DIRECTV
For fans who liked the recent Beast, they might also enjoy the outrageous killer animal movie Anaconda. The movie stars the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube as a documentary crew in the Amazon who are hunted by a giant and deadly snake.
Redditor Ridders1984 said the movie is filled with "terrible acting and special effects but it's entertaining." Jon Voight's hammy performance and some ridiculous kills from the killer snake are among the aspects that fans loved the most.
Showgirls (1995)
- Available on Hoopla and Kanopy
As a notorious Hollywood flop, Showgirls became the stuff of legends and a huge cult hit thanks to its reputation for being so bad. It stars Elizabeth Berkeley as a young woman who heads to Las Vegas to be a dancer, taking her on a wild ride on her way to the top.
Part of the reason fans have such fun with Showgirls is that it takes itself very seriously despite the melodramatic story, over-the-top performances, and laughable dialogue. Redditor johngruber66 also credited director Paul Verhoeven's commentary within the movie with getting "more relevant every year that goes by."
Mac And Me (1988)
- Available on Hoopla and Redbox
Mac and Me might be best-known as a recurring gag every time Paul Rudd appears on Conan O'Brien's show. That has helped cement its status as a cheesy and ridiculous movie that provides plenty of laughs.
It is the story of a young boy who befriends a cute alien on the run from NASA officials. Redditor gf120581 described the movie as a "combination of shameless ripping off of "E.T" and the most blatant product placement ever" with its partnership with Mcdonald's.
Troll 2 (1990)
- Available on Hoopla and Redbox
That_Frog_O_Mine wastes no time in mentioning Troll 2, a film that is synonymous with the term. Troll 2 is infamous for being a movie that's so bad it's good, so much so that there's even a documentary about the making of the film called Best Worst Movie.
Ironically, the documentary is much better than the film itself, but there's still so much to be entertained by in the "sequel." As the Reddit notes, it isn't even about trolls, "it's about goblins." On top of that, the lead actor was a dentist, and there are so many other unbelievable facts about Troll 2.
The Core (2003)
- Available on HBO Max and DIRECTV
The genre of sci-fi disaster movies can be a lot of fun, especially when they go for a cheesy feel. The Core had a huge budget of $85 million, which, adjusted for inflation, is an MCU-sized budget. But no amount of money was enough to keep the movie from being completely absurd.
The film is about a team of scientists traveling to the center of the Earth. And Ronearc finds the movie hilarious, saying that it has the "worst pseudo-science of any movie, ever." The movie gets even more ridiculous when those scientists must set off nuclear explosions to restart the rotation of the Earth.
Plan 9 From Outer Space (1957)
Available on Hoopla Roku and Mubi
Plan 9 From Outer Space was directed by Ed Wood, who is largely considered the worst movie director of all time. SuperNntendoChlmers thinks no differently, and they posit that the 1957 film is "the original 'so bad it's good' movie."
The film intertwines sci-fi and horror in the most mind-bending way possible, as the screen is shared by both aliens and vampires. And though that sounds ridiculous, Wood's sci-fi movie does deserve a remake. Plan 9 might make audiences laugh out loud, but the story still has a lot of potential.
Deck The Halls (2006)
- Available on Netflix
It has been a while since there has been a true family Christmas movie, and Deck The Halls might be to blame for their downfall. AllTheReservations still loves the critically-scathed movie for the exact reasons people hate it. The Redditor says that it's a "textbook example of a stupid Christmas Comedy but it's so ridiculous that it kind of works."
The 2006 feature has the slapstick comedy of Home Alone, and it features neighbors at each other's throats just like in Jingle All The Way. Unfortunately, it has more of a cynical competitive spirit than a Christmas spirit, but it's still hilarious. It is of the lowest-rated Christmas movie though some fans feel it doesn't deserve the hate.
Halloween Kills (2021)
- Available on HBO, HBO Max and DIRECTV
It was almost impossible for Halloween Kills to fail, as it's the sequel to the massively praised 2018 reboot of the franchise, which is by far the highest-grossing movie in the series too. Unfortunately, the producers and director bottled it, and the result is a far-fetched, nonsensical slasher full of plotholes, but it's for all those reasons that it entertained Boringcranberry.
The Reddit simply claims that they "found Halloween Kills absolutely hilarious," and they aren't alone, as so many memes have spawned out of the movie. However, there are just as many viewers who enjoyed the movie, as Kills is one of the 2021 movies that critics hated but audiences loved.
