Beginning in 1977, the cultural phenomenon The franchise has created some of cinema's most iconic characters, moments, quotes, and scenes and has spawned one of the most ionate fandoms on the planet, even having a celebration event every year or two.
The Star Wars franchise does not start and end with the movies though. It branched out into other media such as books, comics, video games and, of course, television shows. The television selection may not be as large as the others and they certainly do fluctuate in quality, but some of them still do add to the lore, and some are just fun for kids. Here are all Star Wars' spinoff television shows, ranked.
STAR WARS: ROLL OUT (2019-)
Star Wars: Rollout is an animated micro-series that is completely for kids, debuting on the depicts sequel characters in BB-8-esque ball shapes on kid-friendly, confined adventures.
The show is adorable and will likely be enjoyed by any child who watches it with its appealing colors, characters, and cute animation. The show falls this low due to it simply being so small and not being canon or meaningful, despite how entertaining it may be for children.
STAR WARS: GALAXY OF ADVENTURES (2018-)
Galaxy Of Adventures is another kid's animated show on the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel, the episodes are a bit longer and recount key moments and character events from the Star Wars franchise with narration over the top.
The show has an aesthetically pleasing animation style and is fairly entertaining and good for children. The episodes are a bit too short though, with not much purpose. On top of that, the narration gets old quickly and the show would arguably fair better with less of it. Still, it may be useful for small children who will watch the show.
STAR WARS RESISTANCE (2018-)
Debuting in 2018, Star Wars: Resistance is a kid-friendly follow up to Rebels, adopting a more anime style of animation and taking place leading up to and during each of the sequel trilogy films. It follows Resistance pilot Kazuda Xiono on his secret missions against the First Order.
With its more kid-friendly dynamic, the show does not click like the previous two big animated Star Wars shows. It undoubtedly is appealing to children but its divisive animated style and lack of truly engaging plots and characters lead the show to not be entirely impressive. It only gets the nod over the above two for being more of a complete show which adds to the lore and does have great inclusions of film characters.
STAR WARS: DROIDS (1985-1986)
The next three shows are pretty interchangeable depending on your taste, but first up is Droids, which follows the adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO before Star Wars takes place.
The show is campy with an outdated animation style. On top of that, the show is not canon and adds nothing to the Star Wars lore, which puts it low on this list with its low quality. Some fans may find some fun and nostalgia in its one season but that is a niche audience.
STAR WARS: EWOKS (1985-1986)
Ewoks is another animated series in the vein of Droids. This time the show focuses on Ewoks, specifically Wicket before the Battle of Endor, as he matures and has adventures with friends.
The show is cheesy and childish but gets the slight edge over Droids for having two seasons and being a bit more fun, but again that is a fine line of personal taste. Either way, the show is not canon which will always hold it back, even if it does have its audience.
STAR WARS: FORCES OF DESTINY (2017-2018)
Forces Of Destiny is another Star Wars micro-series. This one aired on the mainly focusing on the female heroes of the Star Wars universe and, again, is completely for children.
The show packs action, adventure, and a good narrative into its short episodes and are fun looks into the heroines of the galaxy as well as the heroes, and does its part to add to the lore. The show is just for children and may not be enjoyed as a whole by adults, other than just the pieces of lore and fun character combinations it provides.
STAR WARS: CLONE WARS (2003-2005)
Before the acclaimed and beloved 2008 series, Clone Wars was given to Star Wars fans amid the prequels following events of the war between the Republic and Separatists.
The show has short episodes and a stylized 2D animation which is packed full of action. The show is understandably no longer canon, which unfortunately takes away from it and means it is arguable Forces Of Destiny deserves to be higher. However, the action combined with the great characters and very simple narrative makes the show enjoyable and good to watch for any fan.
THE MANDALORIAN (2019-)
There will be no spoilers for the show here since it is not yet released worldwide, but The Force Awakens.
The show has been met with universal acclaim from critics and more difficult to achieve, Star Wars fans. The show is sitting with a 9.0 on IMDb and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It only ranks third due to having just one season, and even then it can be argued to put the show higher. Should it continue its success into season 2 it could get bumped up the list.
STAR WARS: REBELS (2014-2018)
Rebels is the second animated venture of Dave Filoni and it follows the Ghost crew, one of the first cells of the Rebel Alliance, as they take on the Empire and encounter Sith, Inquisitors and weird and wonderful encounters with the Force along the way.
The show got off to a rocky start with some calling it too child-oriented and criticizing the animation style. But over its four seasons, the show gave way to some of Star Wars' best characters. It also introduced some beloved Legends characters, added a lot to the lore of the Force, finished the fantastic journey of Maul, and continued the fantastic story of Ahsoka which was told in season two with one of the best scenes in all of Star Wars. Overall, it is a great show which deserves far more credit.
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (2008-)
What else">The Clone Wars is the full-fledged 6 - soon to be 7 - season adventure following the war between the Republic and Separatists, Clones vs. Droids and Jedi vs. evil. It looks into both the clones and the Jedi, introducing and delving into some of Star Wars' best characters.
This show also got off to a rough start with the disliked film of the same name, but once the series got rolling, the action was great, the characters were phenomenal, and the arcs were simply brilliant. Everything in the show fell into place and fans got characters such as Ahsoka and Rex, and a fantastic addition to the Anakin story, as well as that of the other Jedi and various people across the galaxy.
