Developer Ebb Software has crafted a terrifying adventure in the survival horror FPS Violence that rivals Doom: Eternal lies within Scorn is showcased through unnatural enemies challenging players during a five-act story that spans seven chapters of content. Although Scorn does not take long to beat, players have opportunities to return to its unnerving world and re-experience what makes this title unique.
Puzzles are a foundational part of Scorn's gameplay, taking up certain sections of levels with intricate obstacles that test a player's problem-solving ability. The same can be said of Scorn's enemies, which are powerful obscenities that force players to plan carefully before encounters to overcome dangers. Adventuring through the world holds a plethora of trials and tribulations that create a lasting fear that lingers, making Scorn a perfect Halloween title for players who are avid fans of body-horror-themed settings.
Despite the complexity of puzzles that hinder the player in Scorn, the entire game only takes between 5-7 hours on average to beat. Even less time is necessary should players opt to use a guide to breeze past puzzles during each Act. With a higher focus on an outstanding, singular experience, Scorn seeks to leave a lasting impression through the environment and tight narrative rather than an overly drawn-out story. Players that finish the game are encouraged to replay it through a hidden achievement that remains separate from the other eleven that unlock during a regular playthrough of Scorn's Gigeresque world.
What To Do After Beating Scorn
Players looking for more after beating Scorn can fully complete every achievement in the game, replay through the main story, or try out other survival-horror titles. As of writing, there are no plans for New Game Plus or DLC content for Scorn, meaning that the game remains the definitive content players receive. Although disappointingly short for those wanting more after the credits have rolled, Scorn has a small completion goal and opens the door for players to experiment with other horror-inspired titles.
Fully Complete the Game By Getting Every Achievement
Out of the twelve available achievements in Scorn, one will ultimately be left out during a standard playthrough. Achievement 001 "Extraction" or 002 "Hand in Hand" refer to the Mine Cart puzzle in Act 1, where the player must choose to progress. Unlike the Cylinder Puzzle in Scorn, this choice is unique because it forces the player to either kill or save a creature trapped in a pod. Committing to either decision unlocks one of the two achievements but locks out the other from being accomplished. Players can reload their save file from Act 1 to change their choice, thus meeting the requirements for both achievements to complete all of Scorn's goals.
Replay Through the Main Story
As one might expect of a story invoking such horrors, the narrative raises several questions about the origins of the world itself. Although the focus during a first playthrough would focus on survival, a subsequent run through Scorn could reveal elements of the setting players did not notice the first time. Alternatively, with new knowledge of the combat, players could utilize the full potential of weapons in Scorn to replay specific encounters that gave trouble in the past, taking a newfound satisfaction at destroying monsters that were difficult to overcome previously.
Try Out Other Survival-Horror Titles
Once Scorn has been completed, players might be searching for games that evoke the same senses of terror and world-building. Should the body-horror aspect holds the weight players want to repeat, Lust From Beyond is an indie game with a well-established connection to H.R. Giger's work, which also inspired Scorn's world. Survival-horror series such as the Resident Evil, Evil Within, and Outlast franchises create scares that abound for players looking to jumpstart their hearts, especially considering the The Outlast Trials set to release this year. No matter what game players move on to as the next best thing to do after finishing Scorn, their time within the biological halls fused with flesh remains a special experience sure to last within the mind.
