Does Breaking Bad, and in Nacho's case we now know why. For Kim, Better Call Saul's biggest unresolved question is whether her appetite for the illegal proves fatal, whether she winds up in jail, or whether Kim somehow wriggles free from any negative blow-back.
For now, however, Kim and Jimmy's grandiose Howard Hamlin scam continues in Better Call Saul season 6's "Hit & Run." This phase of the con is designed to further convince Cliff Main that Howard is a spiraling drug addict. Jimmy's role is to steal Howard's car, then pick up Wendy the sex worker. Kim, meanwhile, has arranged a coffee date with Cliff and positioned their table in perfect view of the road, giving the Davis & Main bigwig a front row seat to the humiliating public performance "Howard" and Wendy are about to put on.
For the stunt to succeed, Cliff Main must believe his meeting with Kim is a genuine friend-to-friend catch-up. Rhea Seehorn's character also needs to keep the lawyer talking long enough for Jimmy and Wendy to arrive. To this end, Kim devises an off-the-cuff, improvised reason for inviting Cliff to coffee out of the blue. She pitches him a small, dedicated team of independent lawyers working exclusively on challenging cases to solve a larger systematic problem inside the legal system. Deepening the lie, Kim claims Cliff's state government connections can bring her idea to life, hence why she called him. Even though Kim's entire pitch is merely a distraction until Howard's stolen Jaguar screeches into view, Cliff Main likes what he hears and decides to help Kim fulfill her ambitions. Could leading this revolutionary team of lawyers reveal how Kim's Better Call Saul story ends? And where would that leave Jimmy?
Kim may be riffing like a jazz drummer during her Cliff Main coffee meeting in "Hit & Run," but this lawyer idea has clearly been brewing in the back of her mind. Better Call Saul makes no secret of Kim Wexler's keen social conscience, and though the pitch wasn't her main reason for catching up with Cliff, she's obviously delighted (not to mention surprised) by his . Kim gets so lost in Cliff's praise, she forgets she's supposed to be texting Jimmy the "go" signal, and when rendezvousing with her husband later in the episode, Kim can't hide her pride in how Cliff believes this legal light bulb could actually work.
Now presented with an opportunity to enact real social change by heading up this board of independent lawyers backed by Cliff Main, could Kim switch her attention to this endeavor full time before Better Call Saul's prequel timeline ends" and return to her natural environment of law and legislation, turning away from the shady antics she's been pulling with Jimmy in Better Call Saul seasons 5 & 6?
Kim's new career opportunity can even explain why she and Jimmy are apparently estranged during Breaking Bad. By becoming "Lalo Salamanca's guy," Jimmy is now the pariah of Albuquerque's legal community. In order for Kim to be taken seriously as the person behind this newfound team of legal do-gooders, maybe she's left with no choice but to cut all ties to Jimmy McGill - professional and personal - by the end of Better Call Saul season 6. After a brief vacation in the realm of cartel criminality, Kim would continue her rising career trajectory, while Jimmy gets lumbered with whatever aftermath comes of the Howard Hamlin scam. Such a bitter ending to their partnership would certainly explain why Saul Goodman neglects to mention Kim Wexler in Breaking Bad.
Better Call Saul continues Monday on AMC.
