There are tons of hidden NPCs and encounters in Baldur's Gate 3. Though many runs often go over 100 hours in play time, it's almost impossible for a player to discover everything the game has to offer. With Larian's Patch Updates having added more and more to the game over time, BG3 has one of the most extensive worlds in gaming history.

Baldur's Gate 3 is heavily based off Dungeons & Dragons, and Larian captured the creative element from its inspiration by allowing players to complete quests and progress through the game in many different ways. One of the quests in Act 2 of the game is often completed in a very straightforward way. However, taking the time to explore it more can reveal some hidden lore. It also involves a completely unique character, who some players may have never even heard of.

Players May Talk To Lyrthindor Without Even Realizing It

Lyrthindor Isn't Encountered A Lot In Baldur's Gate 3

The name "Lyrthindor" likely won't ring a bell for many Baldur's Gate 3 players. This is because players usually will not be given much incentive to find him, and if they are, will be unaware of what exactly they're looking for. He is directly linked toconvince him to kill his minions, his displacer beast, and then himself. However, they can also offer to look around the temple to help break Yurgir's deal.

How To Solve The Gauntlet Of Shar Puzzle In Baldur's Gate 3

The Gauntlet of Shar dungeon in Baldur's Gate 3 contains many trials tied to religions of darkness, including more than one tricky puzzle to solve.

Players can learn snippets of information about Lyrthindor by talking to the rats around the Gauntlet of Shar. They'll probably realize that the rats in this area act very strangely, with the ones running around the temple telling them that they don't belong there. What they may not realize, is that by talking to any of these rats, they are actually talking to Lyrthindor himself.

Lyrthindor Is Found In A Hidden Area In The Gauntlet Of Shar

Lyrthindor Will Only Appear In His Original Form If The Player Kills Several Swarms Of Rats

Players should find Lyrthindor after talking to Yurgir. This requires talking to a rat found at the bottom of the statue of Shar in the middle of the temple, which can be reached by climbing down two cragged rocks.

Shortly after, a rat will spawn, who when spoken to will tell the player that Lyrthindor's fragmented memories are scattered among the rats, and warns the player not to harm them. If the player decides to attack anyway, another swarm of rats will spawn in its place and commence battle. Once they're defeated, more rats will spawn, some with differing abilities.

Players don't need much strategy in this fight, as unsurprisingly, the rats all have very little HP. However, a good tactic to finish the battle quickly is to cast spirit guardians, and wait for the rats to walk into their radius.

After the rats have been defeated, a man will remain in their place - this is Lyrthindor. He will berate the player for ruining his plan, and asks them why they couldn't have listened to the rats who told them not to attack. The player then will be unable to dissuade him from attacking them.

As seen in YannimalGR's video, he has some powerful necrotic damage attacks, he isn't really a match for a full party. Upon defeat, he drops a Justiciar's Shield, which grants the wielder the ability to cast darkness around themselves, as well as a Justiciar's scimitar.

Finding Lyrthindor Gives Players Another Alternative To The Yurgir Fight

There Isn't Really A Loophole In Raphael's Deal

Yurgir siding with the player in the House of Hope in Baldur's Gate 3.

As is likely obvious from his appearance and loot, Lyrthindor is a Dark Justiciar. Though many players will assume that there is a loophole in Yurgir's contract, and that the line "leave no justiciar alive to obey" actually refers to anyone who has heard Yurgir's song - including him and his minions, it actually means that he's stuck because Lyrthindor is still alive. Killing Lyrthindor will break Yurgir of his contract, allowing the player to resolve his quest without killing him, but Raphael will swiftly pull him into another.

D&D Lore Proves How Foolish One Iconic Baldur's Gate 3 Villain Truly Is

Baldur's Gate 3 has some powerful foes, but D&D lore shows just how shortsighted one of the most dangerous villains in the game really is.

Speaking to Lyrthindor with the "Speak with Dead" spell after defeating him will allow the player to ask him some questions about his history, where he will possibly reveal that it was actually Raphael who helped him initially escape Yurgir. Something interesting to mention is that he will mention seeking "oblivion" and turning to Shar after losing his wife and daughter to a "plague."

This is extremely similar to Ketheric Thorm's backstory, which could have been why Lyrthindor was inclined to Ketheric's army of Dark Justiciars, though the player cannot ask Lyrthindor his opinion on him. Players who dislike - or don't want to follow along with - Raphael may prefer this route.

Though Yurgir will still end up in the House of Hope, it means players don't have to carry out Raphael's dirty work for him. Though breaking Yurgir from his contract is what is supposed to prompt the player to find Lyrthindor, they can still fight him after Yurgir is dead. Lyrthindor is a fairly obscure character in Baldur's Gate 3, and some players may have been unable to find him.
