Dungeons & Dragons fans from the get-go, but thanks to opportunities introduced by its most recent update, it's on a path to becoming something even more special. Patch 7 for the game added a modding toolkit that makes custom content easier than ever before, and there's already been a lot of interesting content created in the toolkit. Although the toolkit still comes with some major restrictions, officially disallowing map editing and custom campaigns, some community solutions have byed these barriers to make it even more versatile and powerful.

Thanks to the new modding possibilities, Reddit Foreign-Character-29 made a Baldur's Gate 3 recreation of the Yawning Inn from DnD, and the results are seriously impressive. Five screenshots show off details of a large taproom and everything that fills it, including the 40-foot well that grants adventurers access to the Undermountain beneath.

Foreign-Character-29's work on the Yawning Portal Inn is far from complete, as noted in a comment mentioning plans to fill out the space with NPCs. The mod used to make the Yawning Portal Inn is MoonGlasses - BG3 Extended Toolkit, which can be ed from Nexus Mods to assist in the creation of dialogue, quest, and level creation.

What Yawning Portal Inn Means For Baldur's Gate 3

An Iconic D&D Location Is A Promising Addition

As a staple of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, the Yawning Portal Inn has been a part of DnD since 1987, and it's played a part in countless adventures since. In DnD 5e, it got a spotlight thanks to Tales from the Yawning Portal, an anthology book that uses it as the central hub for adventurers to learn about the quests within. The Yawning Portal Inn has also appeared in 5e campaign books set in the city of Waterdeep.

Unsurprisingly, the Yawning Portal Inn shows up at a lot of DnD tables, whether it's part of an official adventure or simply making an appearance in a custom Forgotten Realms campaign. Being able to visit the inn in a Baldur's Gate 3 recreation would prove nostalgic for many players, and it could also open up the opportunity to use it as a virtual hub for DnD play.

Our Take On The Yawning Portal Inn In Baldur's Gate 3

A New World Of Possibility

As a long-term Dungeon Master, I've been excited to see how quickly people are making great use of the unlocked Baldur's Gate 3 toolkit, and the Yawning Portal Inn might be the best example of its potential. DnD is trialing an official 3D virtual tabletop called Project Sigil later this year, but although it's set to be free in some capacity, making the best use of it will probably require investment in the D&D Beyond ecosystem. Exploring the potential of custom locations in Baldur's Gate 3 is an exciting, if convoluted, alternative, especially when creations are as versatile as the Yawning Portal Inn.

Running a full Dungeons & Dragons campaign will essentially always require tools that are more efficient than Baldur's Gate 3 modding, but getting other iconic DnD locations like Castle Ravenloft or Candlekeep in the game could open a lot of doors for memorable sessions or virtual tourism. Foreign-Character-29's Yawning Portal Inn is both a great Baldur's Gate 3 creation on its own and an exciting sign of what else could come.
