The Big Bang Theory. Raj is an accomplished astrophysicist and a member of the geeky gang of friends that is central to the comedy.
Unlike the others, Raj was the only one who remained unattached until the end of the series, much to his chagrin. And lovable though he is, several aspects about his character or his storylines in the show made little sense at times.
His Selective Mutism
Fans are aware that one of the primary characteristics of Raj at the beginning of the series was his selective mutism that made him unable to speak to women. The running gag was that he piped up with women only after he'd had a drink, or two.
But in season 6, the writers decided to finally abandon this defining feature about Raj, but instead of doing it in a convincing manner, they did it in a matter of a few seconds. Raj was upset after Lucy broke up with him and was pouring his heart out to Penny, and realized only then that he hadn't had anything to drink. No proper explanation for the resolution of his selective mutism was out forward which made no sense at all.
The Annoying Big Brother
When Leonard began dating Priya, Raj got overprotective about his sister and kept telling her what she should and shouldn't do.
Of course, Priya wasn't having any of it, but Raj poking his nose into her private life to try and steer it was archaic to begin with, and reiterated the popular stereotype about Indian women needing a male guardian. The idea that he was being the traditionally overprotective older brother was too outdated to make much sense.
Putting Lucy On The Spot
Speaking of being annoying, Raj had hooked up with a cute young woman called Lucy, who shared his social anxieties and wasn't comfortable around people in general.
However, although Raj thought he was being understanding of her situation, all he did was to control her and push her to meet with his friends, knowing very well that she would be thoroughly uncomfortable doing so. It seemed like Raj had lost his senses when he put Lucy on the spot and pressured her, for after all, he was really a very gentle man and himself suffered from social anxiety issues.
His Rivalry With Stuart
There was a time when Raj started having a rivalry of sorts with Stuart, as both tried to get dates with hot women. Raj's competition with Stuart was yet another thing that seemed foolish and made no sense.
His need to not be alone often drove him to be with Stuart, who was another lonely goof, but then that too was messed up by both of them constantly trying to one-up each other. When Bernadette and Howard's baby was born, Raj and Stuart got into another not-so-subtle rivalry as each tried to prove he was more concerned and closer to the couple than the other. The whole storyline was weak and existed simply for the lack of better plots involving Raj.
Living Off His Father
Raj had a good full-time job at Caltech with great career prospects, which is why it made very little sense that he should continue to get a hefty allowance from his father.
It was almost towards the end of the series that Raj finally tells his dad that he won't be needing the pocket money anymore, and starts attempting to live a less expensive lifestyle. But the question is why he didn't give up his lavish lifestyle much earlier and become financially independent since he was perfectly capable of it.
Appointing Sheldon His Business Manager
When Raj gave up his allowance, he had to move into a smaller place. He also decided to have someone else take care of his finances for him.
But the weird thing here was that he appointed Sheldon, of all people, to manage his affairs for him and do his ing. Seeing that Sheldon is literally the most annoying person in the gang and Raj is well aware of that, having suffered him for years and even had the misfortune of working with him, it seemed strange that he should choose him as his manager.
The Ex-Girlfriends' Get-Together
One of the most bizarre things Raj did was to get all his ex-girlfriends together and asked them what they thought was wrong with him.
While it might have been incredibly brave of him to do this gesture, and rather mean of the exes to start ganging up on him, the idea itself was odd to begin with, and showed exactly how desperate Raj was to find someone.
Hitting On His Friends' Girlfriends
One of the weirdest things Raj did on the show was to hit on the girls who were already involved with his best friends. He had a crush on Penny and ended up sleeping with her, although it turned out they hadn't really done it, and then he was infatuated with Bernadette, who was his best friend Howard's fiancée.
But the worst part wasn't that he had the crushes, but that he actually wrote creepy poems and tried to tell everyone about his and Penny's love. For someone as sweet as Raj, it made no sense at all that he should act like a jerk.
Leaving Anu
In the final season, Raj met a smart, ambitious, and independent young woman, Anu, who was eager to give him a chance. Anu was perhaps a little too domineering for someone as gentle as Raj, but she was ready to work on their relationship.
This might have been Raj's one chance at love, it might not have been all roses and romance all the way, but he would have had a partner nonetheless. Yet he decided to give that up for his friends in Pasadena, opting to stay alone, after the primary storyline for his character throughout the series had been his search for a significant other.
Raj's Character Arc
Raj Koothrapalli might have been a lovable goof, but his character lost its way halfway through, becoming whiny and directionless.
He still wanted to be loved, and his friendship with Howard and Bernadette became stronger with time, but other than that he somehow became more and more annoying. There was very little character development and he was probably the only one who didn't evolve meaningfully by the end.
