Five Nights At Freddy's is a horror game with straightforward gameplay, but the same can't be said about its lore. Between the games and several books that have been written with the help of developer Scott Cawthon, there's a lot of information to sift through to piece together this franchise's story. However, this wealth of content leaves plenty of mysteries that have yet to be solved, and a few of them may never truly be answered.
Five Nights At Freddy's details the secrets and mysteries of Fazbear Entertainment, Incorporated. The games reveal a deeper story that begins with a man named William Afton who was a co-owner of the corporation but would go on to kill dozens of children. While the Five Nights At Freddy's terrifying animatronics get the most attention when it comes to scares, the real terror might be hidden in the unsolved mysteries in the games' stories.
1 Vanessa And Vanny
It's known that Vanessa and Vanny are connected, but one ending in FNAF: Security Breach makes a mystery out of their connection when it previously seemed pretty straightforward. In the Unmasked Ending, the player sees Freddy and Vanny fall from the roof of the Pizzaplex, and Vanny - presumably dead - is unmasked to reveal Vanessa. While the game provides plenty of clues that Vanessa is Vanny, the next scene showing Vanessa alive and standing on the roof of the Pizzaplex looking down at the fallen Vanny shifts this connection from clear to mysterious.
2 FNAF: Security Breach's Note Room
DLC for FNAF: Security Breach could shed light on this mystery, but currently the purpose of the room covered in drawings and notes eludes players. This room features notes that are written in binary, some that have words like "fun" or "home" written, and many with pictures of objects that would be common at a birthday party like cake and balloons. Other notes are more cryptic, saying "run" or "hide."
MatPat from FNAF series biggest lore reveals revolve around the Afton family, and future content could add Gregory's identity to that list. Until then, the truth behind this room and the meaning of the messages filling it remain uncertain.
3 The Locked Box In FNAF 4
At the end of FNAF 4, players are shown a box with two locks on it. No matter what a player does, there's no way to open the box, and there's also no way to know what's inside, even with the help of data mining. Naturally, the lack of information about this box has sparked various theories speculating what it could contain, but it seems like one mystery that will be remaining unsolved for now.
4 Midnight Motorist
Midnight Motorist is one of the multiple 8-Bit minigames that add to FNAF lore and fueled fan theories. Midnight Motorist is in FNAF 6, making it one of three minigames that contain lore in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. The player follows Orange Guy, who drives a purple car and is generally believed to be William Afton, despite the color change from his usual purple appearance.
Midnight Motorist alone encomes several FNAF mysteries, such as what or who is buried in the mound of dirt. There aren't clear answers for who is sitting in the chair watching TV at the house, either. But the biggest mysteries of Midnight Motorist might be who left the footprints in the yard from the broken window, and whether the mysterious "he" Orange Guy mentions ran off again or was taken somewhere by force.
5 The Timeline
Figuring out the FNAF game's chronological order to create a timeline that pieces together every canon event in a way that doesn't have plot holes is difficult. Theorists have worked hard to solve the timeline, and MatPat alone has created several variations based on updated information from new games and lore additions from the FNAF books. One feature of the games that can make it difficult to create a full, complete timeline is the lack of definite dates during which a few of the games take place, such as Sister Location.
Another problem that makes creating an accurate timeline difficult is that not every extra piece of content for FNAF is canon. Additionally, there are still canon pieces of the story that have mysterious elements, but its mysteries might be part of Five Nights At Freddy's popularity as a franchise since it gives players puzzles to solve in order to uncover the story. Given the complexities of the story and various games in addition to the content from the books, the timeline might end up being a mystery that remains unsolved.
Five Nights At Freddy's is a franchise that seems to have taken on a life of its own with the participation of players crafting theories to try to fill in the missing pieces of the series' lore. With new content continuously being released, some old mysteries end up being solved, or close enough to being solved that players might feel at peace with an explanation that isn't perfect, but does fit. However, it can seem like new mysteries pop up every time an older one is solved.
It's certain that more lore about Gregory will come in the DLC for FNAF: Security Breach, considering he's shown in the Ruin promo image. However, as the franchise's universe grows, it can seem more difficult for new players to follow the story without help from the many videos posted to help explain the content, especially for players who don't want to purchase the books, but still want to understand how they affect the world of the games. It doesn't seem like the franchise will come to an end anytime soon, and that means that there will probably be plenty of mysteries added for players to ponder over in Five Nights At Freddy's future.
