Alex Winter, co-star of the Bill & Ted Face the Music.

What first began in 1989 with quite literally grown up with the franchise, and this year’s most recent entry found tremendous success despite many critics, and even some fans, feeling that the sequel could fall flat on its face. Though its release occurred during a summer movie season plagued by COVID-19, Bill & Ted Face the Music was one of this year’s most pleasantly surprising treats, and its success further proved to fans that more Bill & Ted films need to happen.

At present, there are no official plans to get a Bill & Ted 4 film off the ground. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a possibility of it happening. During a recent conversation between Winter and Collider, the Bill & Ted star revealed that although a fourth film isn’t currently in the works, both he and Reeves would be interested in making another if they felt it could be as satisfying as Face the Music was. Emphasizing that he and Reeves like working together, Winter said:

"We made this film because Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon came to Keanu [Reeves] and myself with an idea that we thought was genuinely both hilarious and emotional, which is not easy. We would never have done it, if it didn’t do both of those things because frankly there would have been no way to play the characters, if it didn’t do both of those things. We like working together. We don’t need to do another one. We don’t particularly feel there needs to be another one, but we would enjoy making another one. That’s really the honest answer. There’s nothing more to it. We are not currently planning another one. Certainly, no one has come to us and asked us to do another one. I don’t know where those chips are gonna fall. I can tell you that, if there was interest in making another one, and Keanu and I had the ability to come in and do something that would be as satisfying as what we just did, sure. We would both be interested in doing that."

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in Bill and Ted 3

Fans who stuck around for Bill & Ted Face the Music's post-credits scene will recall that Bill and Ted were shown as old men on their deathbeds, rocking out one last time. However, the jam session seemed to have invigorated them, providing an unintentional metaphor of sorts with regard to the franchise as a whole. These characters aren’t ready to disappear, and now it appears that both Winter and Reeves are willing to confirm as much.

At the same time, however, Winter is speaking for Reeves by saying that both of them are interested in doing Bill & Ted 4. As anyone who was paying attention to the production of Face the Music can attest, even a hit franchise can encounter no small amount of obstacles in getting new sequels made. But of course, given that Bill & Ted Face the Music was the hit that it was, this time around, the process of getting a sequel off the ground could be much easier.
