With Suicide Squad.

In Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn was unceremoniously emancipated from her relationship with The Joker, and later caught the attention of bad boy Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor). When the Gotham City villain known as Black Mask put out a hit on Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), Harley Quinn and company sought justice with the assistance of Detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Birds of Prey co-starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress, Jurnee Smollett as Dinah Laurel Lance aka Black Canary, and Chris Messina as Black Mask's sadistic henchman Victor Zsasz.

Birds of Prey concluded with an explanation of how the titular characters decided to officially become a unit. And the film didn't end well for the two primary villains, though one managed to out-live the other before getting dealt with by Harley and her pals. Unfortunately, in the year-plus since Birds of Prey's release, DC has yet to confirm that a Birds of Prey 2 will happen, with star Robbie also downplaying the possibility. Here's what we know.

Birds Of Prey 2 Isn't Confirmed (Yet)

Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Margot Robbie, Ella Jay Basco and Jurnee Smollett-Bell stood together in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

While Birds of Prey was greenlit prior to Suicide Squad's 2016 release, Birds of Prey 2 hasn't been officially announced yet, and at this point, it's up in the air as to whether a sequel starring Harley's R-rated girl-gang will ever materialize. However, just because Birds of Prey 2 is on the backburner, doesn't mean fans won't get to see more from any of its non-Harley characters.

Black Canary Is Starring In A Birds of Prey Spinoff Movie

While Birds of Prey 2 remains in limbo, Warner Bros. and DC have announced that actress Jurnee Smollett will reprise the role of Dinah Lance, aka Lovecraft Country and worked with Smollett on the show, is writing the script for Black Canary's spinoff, although a director hasn't been hired yet. No release date is available for the spinoff either.

Since Birds of Prey 2 has yet to be greenlit as of summer 2021, it's hard to imagine it arriving anytime soon, as the next several years of DCEU scheduling are getting pretty full. If the Black Canary spinoff performs well on HBO Max though, there's certainly a possibility that Warner Bros. will decide to take another look at making Birds of Prey 2 sooner than later.

Birds Of Prey Sets Up A Sequel

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey ends with Harley Quinn and company taking down Black Mask and Victor Zsasz. Crucially, Cassandra Cain plays an important role, resulting in the official formation of the Birds of Prey squad consisting of Huntress, Black Canary, and Montoya. As for Harley Quinn, she teams up with Cassandra for a separate journey. Birds of Prey 2 could include the main cast from the original film, but it would presumably follow the newly-formed three-woman squad sans Harley and Cassandra.

Birds Of Prey 2 Cast

Birds of Prey

If Birds of Prey 2 happens, expect it to be a spotlight for Winstead (a potential A-list mainstream star) as Huntress. Accomplished performers Smollett and Perez will likely round out the main cast, and both Robbie and Basco would certainly be involved somehow. For Birds of Prey 2, there would be loads of speculation about the villain characters. And given that the filmmakers seem intent on pushing the boundaries, it's possible that a female villain will emerge rather than a male baddie surrounded by the usual male henchmen.
