The series began with Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s Black Hammer, a mystery tale involving several heroes stranded on an eerie farm in a small town they were unable to escape. When the daughter of the titular Black Hammer begins an investigation into her father’s disappearance, the heroes embark on a journey that exposes the very fabric of their reality. The comic gave birth to a larger universe spearheaded by Lemire, with spin-offs examining the lives of the other heroes and villains that make up the world. Now, Lemire aims to expand this world with a graphic novel about the hero for who the story is named.
The Last Days of Black Hammer was just announced alongside several other new original projects that will premiere on Substack. Detailed in Lemire's Barbalien before being sent to the mysterious farm, revealing "all kinds of new layers" to characters fans believed they understood. According to Lemire’s newsletter, The Last Days of Black Hammer will release in 4-5 page drops, with a digital option once a chapter is completed. Fans of print need not worry, though, because Dark Horse Comics will publish a physical collection after the series is concluded.
The shift of Jeff Lemire’s grand work to a more digital venue isn’t exactly unexpected. He mentioned plans to create and distribute additional Black Hammer stories for the platform when he first ed Substack back in August of 2021. But this new addition to the franchise's lore is a welcome one for fans of the series. Lemire has spent a lot of time expanding the Black Hammer universe at a rapid pace. From exploring different genres such as horror and sci-fi to crossing his property over with the Justice League, Black Hammer is a labor of love to the comic book medium, and fans welcomed it in the same spirit.
How the new series will change the facts of the original, or set up new threats and characters in the ambitious world, will be revealed as it unfolds. The Last Days of Black Hammer is available right now, exclusively and for free, on Jeff Lemire’s Substack newsletter, Tales From the Farm.
