Although Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 can still give her the farewell that Endgame and Phase 4 failed to thanks to two characters close to her that are coming back. The MCU is finally moving on from the Infinity Saga, Thanos, Iron Man, and the snap, and it’s now focused on its multiverse and the many dangers and mysteries in it, but it continues to introduce new characters and teams. However, the Multiverse Saga is also being used to fix past MCU mistakes, and Phase 5 can do so with Black Widow.

Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) made her MCU debut in Iron Man 2 and ed the original Avengers team not long after. Black Widow was part of the Time Heist team in Avengers: Endgame, but in order for her and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to get Black Widow – but Marvel can now fix this in Phase 5 thanks to the return of two of her Russian family.

Avengers: Endgame Failed To Give Black Widow A Proper Sendoff

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow tears up while talking to Hawkeye on Vormir in Avengers Endgame

Avengers: Endgame was packed with twists and surprises, though not all of them were good. Natasha’s sacrifice was one of the movie’s most shocking and tragic moments, more so after the emotional last moments she shared with Hawkeye. Given that there was a much bigger problem to deal with in Endgame, the movie forgot about Natasha’s death quite quickly and moved forward with the return of half of the universe and the Battle of Earth, but the MCU didn’t even give Black Widow a proper sendoff at the end of Endgame.

Black Widow’s sacrifice was overshadowed by Iron Man’s, who with the snap of his fingers got rid of Thanos and his armies, saving the universe. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark was given a big funeral, with all the current heroes in the MCU – Avengers, New Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other allies – attending, while Black Widow was only mentioned in a conversation between the surviving original Avengers, with Hulk saying he tried to bring her back but it wasn't possible. Not only did Endgame fail at giving meaning to Black Widow’s death in Vormir, but it forgot about what she did and didn’t care about giving her the farewell she definitely deserved.

With most of the original Avengers now retired, there aren’t many links to Black Widow anymore, but Black Widow’s death can be not only what brings Red Guardian and Yelena back together as a team but can also give them a reason to keep fighting, as it’s the best way they can honor their late daughter and sister.

Like with other fallen MCU characters, it’s highly unlikely Black Widow will be brought back in the Multiverse Saga (and not even as a variant), but it’s not too late for Marvel to make up for its Black Widow mistakes since Avengers: Endgame, and it has a brand-new chance to honor her legacy and give her the farewell she deserves after everything she did for the MCU.
