Warning! Spoilers for The Suicide Squad.
After Bloodsport's introduction in end Project Starfish.
Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad doesn't explicitly establish how it relates to David Ayer's Suicide Squad from 2016, but it's essentially a spiritual sequel considering the return of familiar characters like Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Harley Quinn), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Waller. This allowed Gunn to debut a slew of fresh characters into the DCEU; while most of them eventually died in the flick, some survived, including Bloodsport, and are expected to be key players in the franchise moving forward.
After through a Superman prequel tackling what really went down between him and the Man of Steel, which is what landed him in prison.
During Bloodsport's introduction, Waller reveals that anything can be a weapon in his hands. He's serving time in Belle Reve Penitentiary after putting Superman in the ICU for shooting him with a Kryptonite bullet. This tidbit effectively established DuBois' skills as a mercenary and was a great way to set up his eventual shoot-out with Peacemaker (John Cena) later on in The Suicide Squad. But at the same time, it has also piqued the interest of viewers who want to know more about the said incident. Considering that the film is presumed to take place in the DCEU continuity, this means that Bloodsport may have injured Henry Cavill's Superman. Depending on when the movie's events land on the timeline, this could explain why Clark Kent didn't meddle with the Corto Maltese mission.
ittedly, it might be tricky to tackle this particular plotline since Cavill's future in the DCEU is currently uncertain. There's no word yet on Man of Steel 2, and Warner Bros. is currently in the processing of introducing a different iteration of the character. But, if the studio is looking for ways to continue building their premier hero's arc, doing a prequel revealing his bout with Bloodsport may be the perfect opportunity they are looking for. For what it's worth, Elba has already expressed his eagerness to do this project after his debut in The Suicide Squad.
