Horror films are the favorite genre of many people. They allow the audience to be afraid but still remain safe, in the comfort of their homes or in the cinemas. One of the most successful film studios of recent years that specializes in this film genre is Blumhouse.
The studio offers new horror films each year and introduced a rich variety of different stories to the world, giving each horror fan an opportunity to find the one story they will truly enjoy. But there are still some Blumhouse horrors that would deserve a lot more attention than they got and some that are so bad they're good.
Underrated Horror Gems: Hush (2016)
Facing a masked killer is never a pleasant experience but it happens in horror films fairly often. Hush brings a new twist to the trope. Unlike most horror films' heroines, Maddie (Kate Siegel) is deaf and mute since she lost the ability to hear and speak as a teenager.
When somebody can't hear, realizing there's a killer nearby is that much harder, but luckily, Maddie won't give up easily. Not as many people saw this intense movie as it would have deserved.
So-Bad-They're-Good Hits: Fantasy Island (2020)
Based on a TV series, the recent Fantasy Island got a lot of hate from both the critics and the audience alike. However, while it's true that the film could get so much more from its attractive topic - an island fulfilling the wishes of its visitors - there are still some pretty good moments in the film which are genuinely scary.
And some of the actors aren't as bad either, considering the script doesn't give them too much to work with.
Underrated Horror Gems: Glass (2019)
The 2019 film Glass was a successful enough movie but it still could have garnered a larger audience considering its many qualities, for example, the excellent actors who play in the film.
However, what deterred some of the viewers was the fact that Glass was the third installment in the Unbreakable trilogy and not all people were familiar with the previous two films which made this one harder to understand for some of the audience. Especially the younger viewers might not have seen the first film Unbreakable since it came out all the way back in 2000.
So-Bad-They're-Good Hits: Ouija (2014)
Messing with the Ouija board is never a good idea but even though it's a well-spread knowledge, the heroes of this film still didn't get the memo. Ouija might not be the most original film in the world and many of its moments will be familiar to any horror movie fan but it manages to offer a lot of suspenseful and frightening scenes.
The Ouija board is simply one of those horror props that will never quite lose its charm.
Underrated Horror Gems: Purge (2013)
It's now a whole franchise so it's easy to forget the first film which kickstarted the series back in 2013. The film currently has a rating of 5.7 on IMDb which is decent enough but could be better, considering how well the franchise has done over the years.
What draws many viewers to it is its main premise - in the world of the Purge, for one night a year people are allowed to do whatever they want and nothing is illegal. Which, unsurprisingly, brings out the worst in many people.
So-Bad-They're-Good Hits: The Darkness (2016)
Just like the above-mentioned Ouija, this horror movie doesn't try to offer a brand new plot. Instead, it takes previously well-known horror motives and connects them in a film that isn't as coherent as one might like but still can frighten people under the right circumstances.
But the main reason why to watch the film is movies.
Underrated Horror Gems: Upgrade (2018)
Even the viewers who don't like horror movies very much could enjoy this one since Upgrade is closer to a sci-fi thriller with a few scary moments than a typical horror film. It also borrows some storytelling tropes from superhero films but manages to introduce them in a new, refreshing context.
And what's it about? A man and his girlfriend get attacked, she dies, he's severely injured and when he gets an experimental technology implanted which allows him to walk and fight again, he decides to get revenge on the man who killed the love of his life.
So-Bad-They're-Good Hits: Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
The first 2017 film was a breath of fresh air in the world of the horror film since it mixed horror and comedy and sci-fi in a story about a time loop and a serial killer. The second film doesn't really know what to do with the story and the "Wow!" effect that was present with the first film vanishes.
That said, Tree is still a sympathetic enough heroine and the film contains a lot of funny moments that have the potential to make the audience laugh and enjoy the slightly over-the-top story.
Underrated Horror Gems: Cam (2018)
And the price for the most Cam starts fairly innocently, as innocently as a film about a girl who works as an internet cam girl can start. But the situation goes quickly south when the main heroine's identical double appears on the scene.
Some people are genuinely worried about someone stealing their identity and/or becoming them and this film plays well with such fears.
So-Bad-They're-Good Hits: Truth Or Dare (2018)
The former Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale almost seems to have a knack for starring in horror films the audience and critics spew hate on even though they're not that bad - as guilty pleasure films, at least.
Truth or Dare is a film about a curse and while some parts of it don't make much sense, it still contains a lot of good ideas and intense, scary moments that will cause the goosebumps to appear.
