According to an insider source, new Borderlands 2 DLC will be arriving shortly, and the content will help cover what happened in the interim between the end of that game's narrative and the beginning of Borderlands 3. Borderlands 2 hasn't had content updates in a long time outside of re-releases and touch-ups, with the last major DLC being Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax that released all the way back in 2014.
Borderlands 3 has generated a lot of positive buzz with its gameplay reveal and former Claptrap voice actor David Eddings. It has gotten to the point that many people associate Pitchford's missteps with Borderlands 3 more than the game's actual content, an issue for Gearbox, especially since the product itself looks very good.
That might be part of the reason why Borderlands 2 is apparently being resurrected one more time just months before Borderlands 3 releases. According to a report from PlayStationLifestyle, an Borderlands 2 expansion called Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary is on the way, and it's coming soon—the source of the leak believes it will drop sometime during E3 week. There's nothing else known about what the content will revolve around, or what platforms it will be released on, but it's safe to assume it will involve Lilith and Sanctuary 2, a homebase that has never existed in-game but presumably was established at some point before Borderlands 3's Sanctuary 3.
We also know that Borderlands 3 appears to revolve heavily around Sirens, the caster class of the games that has an important part in the universe's lore. Lilith, as one of the most popular Sirens ever established, is a fan favorite and has already been sighted in the build-up to Borderlands 3, although she appeared without her Siren tattoos. The new Borderlands 2 DLC will likely dive into how those tattoos end up removed, and should help cement the Calypso Twins as a threat on-par with the legendary Handsome Jack.
Borderlands 2 DLC might seem like a bizarre release so close to Borderlands 3, but it's also kind of genius. Gearbox wants to tide people over before the release of the new game, which is still months away, and likely wants to shed the negative perception that Pitchford has begun to tie into Borderlands 3. Releasing new DLC that explains how we end up in Borderlands 3 accomplishes both of those goals while also generating buzz and cashing in on Borderlands 2 one last time, as it might lead to people re-purchasing the game on a newer platform to experience the new DLC.
