These paid updates were in addition to several free changes, such as a minigame that rewards cosmetic items and helps real-life scientists with DNA research. And while Borderlands 3 does not fully embrace the games as a service trend popping up all over the AAA space, developer Gearbox is happy to add seasonal events and limited edition unlocks for dedicated players. Broken Hearts Day, Battle of the Cartels, and Bloody Harvest each changed the game in significant ways for a few weeks, and there are likely more events of that nature on the horizon.

Even though Borderlands 3 is well into its second year on the market, there's still plenty of content on the horizon as well. The second half of Season 2 is coming in Spring of 2021. Called the Director's Cut, its contents aren't well known as of yet, although one would assume it would have new modes and features similar to the Designer's Cut from earlier this year. Gearbox has also promised to continue adding mini-events and balancing the gameplay via patches, even as the work begins on whatever is on the horizon for the studio.
Even if Borderlands 3 didn't capture the attention of a good number of players who have already blasted their way through several other games in the franchise, diehard fans and new players alike drove the game to become another massive success. It was just the kind of success Gearbox needed after the letdown of Battleborn, although one hopes that the studio is able to take some of this franchise's magic into something new for its next game. Even if it's just a new spin on the Borderlands universe, a fifth mainline entry in the series that doesn't bring something new to the table could run the risk of attracting even fewer fans and falling behind more nimble game developers.
