More Borderlands 4 news has finally arrived, including an official release date and an announcement of an State of Play specifically for news about the latest action around Pandora. The exciting first-person shooter has a strong fanbase eagerly awaiting every drop of information Gearbox Studios provides, and today's trailer gave plenty to comb through. This sci-fi adventure will, once again, include both solo play and co-op for up to four players. The game is said to include characters new and old, signifying that there will be returning faces to continue the mayhem.
This news came from Randy Varnell and Randy Pitchford, the Chief Creative Officer and the Founder of Gearbox Studios, during today's PlayStation State of Play event. Alongside the all-new, action-packed trailer, full of all the typical chaos of any Borderlands game, which lasted over a minute, the two Randy's briefly spoke of the State of Play on the game, and what will be included that fans can look forward to, and provided the release date for Borderlands 4 of this September 23.
What We Learned From Feb's State of Play
Release Date, Special Event, And A New Trailer
Borderlands 4 will be released on September 23, 2025, with a special State of Play broadcast taking place this Spring. No specific date was provided for the State of Play, but it will be exclusively centered on the latest in the Borderlands series. The event will include a deep dive to give everyone more details on the combat, action skills, guns, vault hunters, and more.
The State of Play will be presented as a PlayStation event, but that doesn't mean that the game is going to be an exclusive. The release date for Borderlands 4 sounds as though it will be a simultaneous release for all players on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games.
In the description on the trailer video, it says the following about the game:
Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now, a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet. Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits, and vicious beasts, with new traversal mechanics like: double jumping, gliding, dodging, fixed-point grappling, and more.
Though vague, this description of the game gives players an idea of the new dictator, the Timekeeper, who they will be fighting and gives plenty of little tidbits for fans to dissect as the excitement over the game continues to grow.
Our Take: Borderlands 4 Already Looks Like A Hit
Trailer Shows There Is More Of Everything Fans Love
The guns, the action, and the classic look and feel of everything shown in the launch date trailer already looks like Borderlands 4 will include all the chaotic mayhem, humor, and loot that this series is known for. Bloodthirsty bandits seem to be in rich supply, being a staple of every trailer for the game since its announcement. While bandits are certainly not new to the series, they may be playing an even greater role under the Timekeeper, or simply have come along for the ride in their fight for chaos.

I'm Worried That Borderlands 4 Will Repeat A Huge DLC Mistake
I'm really hoping that the inevitable Borderlands 4 DLC won't look anything like the lackluster able content from Tiny Tina's Wonderland.
Though it is fun to speculate, it will be even more interesting to see what developers have in store for fans during the Borderlands State of Play event this spring. Hopefully, fans will then find out more about which beloved characters will be returning, and a deeper look on the story and new mechanics of this entry in the series. Borderlands 4 is already available for prospective vault hunters to wishlist now.
