Always the loyal follower, Code dedicated himself to carrying out Isshiki Otsutsuki's plans for Boruto despite the fact that he was the chosen one until he learned the true secret of his white kama.
Originally chosen by Naruto's Otsutsuki Clan leaders to harvest and consume the chakra fruit produced by the Earth's God Tree, Isshiki was betrayed by his partner Kaguya and left for dead. However, Isshiki saved himself by making use of a unique Otsutsuki trait, namely the ability to transfer their soul to anyone near their body at the time of death via a biometric device known as a kama, which the dying Otsutsuki implants on the host before dying. Once the transfer is complete, the dying Otsutsuki takes over the host and essential resurrections themselves in the new body. It is the main means used by the Otsutsukis to perpetuate themselves. Isshiki transferred to a monk named Jigen who was ing by his body as he died. Jigen's body, however, was not healthy enough to sustain Isshiki, so a search was made to find a better host. Code was engineered to be an Isshiki vessel, but since the kama that was inscribed on him was white rather than the black color Otsutsukis normally used to make the transfer, he was deemed defective for transfer.
Code Can Become a God in Boruto
While Code's white kama did not give him the ability to "" Isshiki into this body, in Boruto #55 he learned that it bestowed an even better benefit - the ability to become his own Otsutsuki. As Isshiki's astral image makes clear in the chapter, the white kama is not completely defective. It implanted Code with enough of Isshiki's soul that if he were to eat the chakra fruit of a divine God Tree, he would be able to "upgrade" himself to "become a new Otsutsuki", and in the process become the Earth-based replacement for Boruto villains like Kaguya, Isshiki, and Momoshiki. This is an important revelation for the story. Up until this point, the assumption was that since the Otsutsuki were an alien species, the only way for the clan to add new was through procreation. So, the fact that Code, who has no bloodline connections to the Otsutsuki Clan, can still become an Otsutsuki is surprising and is likely to be a major plot point as the story moves forward.
Isshiki believes it is imperative that Code do what is necessary to become an Otsutsuki in order to continue the clan's glorious history of intergalactic, multidimensional conquest and domination. The only "hitch" blocking a Code to Otsutsuki transformation is that Code will need to offer Boruto or Kawaki as a sacrifice to the Ten-Tails Beast in order to seed and cultivate a new divine God Tree.
Code, in a way, wins by failing to be a suitable vessel, which was his dream and the reason for the tension with Kawaki, who is a suitable vessel for Isshiki. If he were a suitable vessel, he would have died sacrificing himself to allow Isshiki to take over his body. His glory would have been in giving up his life for the greater Otsutsuki good. However, if succeeds at becoming, rather than facilitating, an Otsutsuki, not only will he have the power to rule over the Earth and see his enemies Naruto, Boruto, and Kawaki driven before him, but potentially if he's enterprising enough to become an Otsutsuki God. It would be an extraordinary change of circumstance for a kid who most recently thought himself was a failure.
Boruto is now available from Viz Media.
