Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex #6While there's only been six chapters of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, while setting the foundation for even greater shifts in the overall trajectory of the developing plot.

As implied in its title, the Next Generation focused on the evolution of the shinobi after Naruto, and their adventures in a world that has changed since Kaguya Otsutsuki's resurrection and defeat. When it ended in Boruto Chapter #80, the Next Generation was the center of Boruto, and fully in control of the narrative. Nowhere was this more evident than in the rise of Kawaki, and the transformation of Boruto into the Konoha's Public Enemy No. 1.

Boruto is Being Kicked Out of Konoha By Kawaki

Kawaki's ascencion and Boruto's fall from grace became the story's focus. But their story was only possible due to two major events. First, Kawaki's elevated status wouldn't have been possible without Eida as her infatuation with him ultimately led to her unlocking Omnipotence and manipulating the minds of many to view him as Naruto's son. Second, by keeping Naruto hidden in a secret dimension known only to him, Kawaki effectively removes the one guaranteed method of disrupting Eida's control over the world.

Cracks In the Kawaki-Eida Partnership

Kawaki Holds Eida Up in Boruto

While time skips are normally used to advance the plot by changing a story's status quo, this wasn't the expectation with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. To be sure, the plot had already been disrupted by the whole Kawaki-Boruto story. If anything, Blue Vortex was expected to further develop that disruption. However, as its last few chapters show, the three years between Next Generations and Two Blue Vortex seem to have generated its own disruptive effect.

This is best demonstrated in the rift between Kawaki and Eida as revealed in Two Blue Vortex Chapter #6. There, the fact that Kawaki displayed little concern for Eida's safety, despite her shocking revelation about the sentient God Tree's intention to harm her, hints at potential tension in their relationship. Eida seemed surprised by his coldness, especially considering how intimate the relationship seemed at the end of Next Generations. Naturally, a heartbroken Eida makes Boruto's return much more possible. Eida is the most powerful person Boruto could recruit to help him restore the original status quo.

The Road To Naruto Runs Through Kawaki

In addition to Kawaki, possibly losing the one person able to uphold his lie, the appearance of Boruto's sentient God Trees also threatens to expose him. In Chapter #6, The God Trees leader, Jura reveals that he wants to devour Naruto. His desire will eventually lead him to Konoha Village - the place where Naruto was last seen. However, no matter how many people he asks or kills, no one will be able to help him because everyone there thinks the Seventh Hokage is dead. Accordingly, as Daemon points out, when that happens, Kawaki's secret will be exposed, and not even Eida's charms will be able to help him out.

These two developments portend a major change in the "Kawaki as leader, Boruto as outlaw" status quo. Moreover, they do not even need to be completed for the disruption. Kawaki's apathy toward Eida's feelings does not need to end in a full breakup. It just needs to be enough for Eida to believe she needs an alternate means of . Similarly, Kawaki does not need to be caught red-handed for his lies. All that is necessary is for people to begin wondering about Noruto's whereabouts. Either or both, give Boruto an opportunity to win the hearts and minds of the community and secure his return.
