  • The Bourne franchise has had its ups and downs, with Damon leaving temporarily due to screenplay issues.
  • Matt Damon's participation is crucial for the success of the Bourne movies, as his presence has consistently performed well at the box office.

In November 2023, it was confirmed that a sixth Jason Bourne movie was officially in development, however, considering the fact that star Matt Damon is still on the fence about returning, Bourne 6 could have some serious problems. The Bourne franchise is a series of action movies based on books by author Robert Ludlum. The story follows Jason Bourne, an amnesiac man who slowly starts to discover that he is a CIA assassin. At this point, there are five Bourne movies in the franchise: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy, and Jason Bourne. Meanwhile, Bourne 6 is currently being developed.

Although the Bourne franchise is well-loved among action fans, the series has not always seen smooth sailing. For example, Jason Bourne actor Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross. But, despite the fact that Damon returned for 2016's Jason Bourne, that is no guarantee that he will be on board for Bourne 6. In fact, Daman hasn't said much about the sequel at all.

Matt Damon Could Ruin Bourne 6's Development If He's Not Pleased By The Script

Even though Bourne 6 is being written with the intention to bring Jason Bourne back, this could be totally ruined if Matt Damon decides not to return to the franchise. And unfortunately, this is a big possibility. Considering Damon's history with the Bourne franchise, it isn't too far-fetched to assume that if the script is not up to his standards, the actor simply will not return. He proved this when he left the franchise in 2007 after The Bourne Ultimatum, and again when he returned in 2016 when Jason Bourne got a new screenwriter. In this way, Bourne 6 is hinging on Matt Damon's opinion.

Ultimately, Matt Damon's participation in the Bourne franchise is pretty important. Aside from the fact that Matt Damon is the titular character, the movies have simply done their best when he is in them. Although The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner, did not bomb, it still did not reach the heights that Damon's work did. His latest film in the franchise, Jason Bourne, made the most money out of all five movies. Therefore, if Matt Damon were to return for one final hurrah as Jason Bourne, it would mean that the movie has a strong chance of succeeding.

Can Bourne 6 Still Happen If Matt Damon Does Not Return?

Of course, the Bourne franchise will not be totally lost if Matt Damon does not return. Just like with The Bourne Legacy in 2012, the franchise can find a new actor to lead Bourne 6. This could be Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Aaron Cross or a completely new action star. While this is always going to be a risky endeavor, it could end up working out well for the franchise, especially if they attain a well-liked actor. Either way, the Bourne franchise is not dead yet, and though Bourne 6 can survive with someone completely new, getting Matt Damon back on board would be the best way forward.
