There are more stories left to be told in the Breaking Bad started out as somewhat of a sleeper hit for the network when it premiered in 2008, the series has since gone on to become one of the most celebrated and highly-regarded television series in history. However, the world crafted by creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan proved too rich with characters and stories to be confined to Breaking Bad's five-season run.
Following the show's finale in 2013, AMC debuted a spinoff prequel series in 2015, Better Call Saul, that would follow Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) unscrupulous attorney, Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), as he went from ambulance chaser to criminal lawyer. That show is currently in the middle of its sixth and final season. Additionally, in 2019, Breaking Bad received a follow-up straight-to-streaming movie with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, which continued the story of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) following the events of the show's final episode. But it seems like there's the possibility of even more stories to come out of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In a recent interview with Variety, McDermott spoke about the possibility of further expansions of the Breaking Bad universe once Better Call Saul wraps. After saying that there aren't currently any projects in production, he emphasized that the network is more than happy to produce more Breaking Bad content should Gilligan or Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould approach them with an idea. I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it... I think you’d have to ask them, but the door is always open and I long for the day my phone rings and Vince, Peter or our friends at Sony call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another show set in this universe.
Though there aren't currently any plans in place for additional productions, the fact that McDermott says the door is always open is an encouraging sign for followers of either show. Since its debut, Better Call Saul has been met with critical praise equal to that of its predecessor. Similarly, El Camino was a hit when it was released on Netflix. So there is clearly still an audience for more stories set in and around the world of Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, and Saul Goodman.
Both Walt and Jesse are set to return in Better Call Saul before its finale, so their stories are clearly not done. It would be curious what another Breaking Bad spinoff might look like. A straight sequel seems out of the question as Walter White seemingly died in the show's finale and El Camino concluded with Jesse leaving behind his life of crime to live a secluded life in Alaska. It's unclear how Better Call Saul will wrap up, but Saul will inevitably end up in the law office seen in Breaking Bad. Still, over the course of their collective 11 seasons, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul have introduced a plethora of side characters - both major and minor - who seem to have rich and interesting backstories. If one of the showrunners wants to explore them further, it seems like all they have to do is ask.
