There is a chance that the games occur in different Zelda timelines altogether and differ greatly from one another concerning how the events of the Great Calamity play out, it might seem impossible for BOTW 2 to follow up on both continuities. Still, the endings of these two games might allude to how they can be implemented into the next story.

The true ending to Breath of the Wild sets up an optimistic, yet bittersweet, future for Hyrule. Though the threat of Calamity Ganon has been neutralized, the original Champions are gone, and Zelda's sealing powers have dwindled away, leaving the land vulnerable. Still, Age of Calamity sets up a possible contingency against further threats in BOTW 2.

Age of Calamity's secret ending sees the repair of Zelda's diminutive guardian friend, Terrako. The little guardian plays an integral role in the game's story, changing the course of history by bringing the Champions' successors into the past to combat Calamity Ganon. With this, a number of changes occur: Link never sustains his life-threatening injuries, Zelda learns to use her awakened powers at will, and the Champions never perish. While Terrako's revival can be seen as simply a joyful reunion in Age of Calamity, it could also become a means of introducing this new history to Breath of the Wild 2's timeline.

Age of Calamity's Terrako Might Bridge the Timelines in Breath of the Wild 2

Potentially, Terrako could use his time-travel capabilities to once again bridge the gap between the split timelines in Breath of the Wild 2. Confronted by a new danger, Link and Zelda could attempt to research its source in the past with Terrako's help. If the theory regarding Astor's potential appearance in the BOTW timeline has any merit, the duo would be able to learn about his actions in Age of Calamity. Additionally, Link and Zelda could receive guidance and aid from the alternate versions of the Champions, or receive new equipment and upgrades from a youthful Purah and Robbie.

Such a story would be incredibly ambitious for Breath of the Wild 2. It is possible that Age of Calamity will not be referenced at all, and BOTW 2 will only follow up on the events of Breath of the Wild. Still, Riju, Teba, Sidon, and Yunobo return to their own time at the end of Age of Calamity, leaving the possibility of the alternate timeline showing up in Breath of the Wild 2 open for now.
