No Time to Die is released.

As one of the biggest and most widely renowned fictional characters on the big screen, the question of who plays Bond is still a major point of interest for many. Each time a new actor is due to be chosen, years of speculation have ensued. This process has intensified in the modern era, thanks to the internet and social media, as fans now arguably play a much bigger role in getting their favorites into consideration. In addition to this, the opinion that it’s well past time for the character to be played by someone who isn’t necessarily white has opened up new possibilities for who can be Bond. Idris Elba was one of the first contenders for the 007 crown, but with time there’s been a vast and diverse collection of suggestions.

Most recently, a campaign to get Page into serious consideration for the role has kicked off. Fans of the Netflix series Bridgerton have taken up the call – initiated personally by Page, and so far, there’s been plenty of talk surrounding the possibility. But aside from having gotten people to consider him as the new face of Bond, what does Page really think about his chances? As Deadline has reported, during an interview with Page on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the subject of Bond came up, giving Page the chance to speak his mind:

“If you’re a Brit and you do something of any regard that people renown well, people are going to start saying the ‘B word’. I’m very glad to have the badge, I’m very glad to be in the company of such people who have the badge, but it’s just a badge.”

The idea of who is or isn’t perfect for the role of Bond is something that isn’t always easy to agree on. There are those who feel that the role can only ever be just as Fleming intended it to be in his novels. However, with the ing of time, this definition of Bond has increasingly become less of a deal-breaker. Back in 2005 when Craig was officially announced as the new face of the character, considerable criticism was voiced over the fact that he was blonde. This sort of nit-picking was overlooked rather quickly, however, as Craig proved himself to be quite adept at handling the particulars of the demanding role. Today, the fact remains that a Black Bond shouldn’t be a controversial option at all, yet somehow continues to be for some.

In the case of Page, it’s understandable how his recently kicked off James Bond campaign could be considered irksome. This is because it was the actor himself who first got the ball rolling through a social media post. Several days on, and Page is acting as though the public have simply foisted this upon him because he’s British and famous. This isn’t to say that Page couldn’t be a great 007, but in the long run it’s hard to say whether or not he represents a legitimate possibility for becoming one of the biggest franchise characters in existence.
