Brightburn 2 In Development, Sequel To James Gunn-Produced Superman Riff Is Doing Something Controversial

Brightburn 2 gets a disappointing update years after the release of the first movie. Produced by James Gunn, the Superman-inspired retelling with a horror twist imagines a child who crash-landed on Earth but becomes a villain instead of a hero. The horror movie was directed by David Yarovesky and features a leading cast including Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, and Abraham Clinkscales.

On Threads, update on Brightburn 2. While tagging the producer, a inquired “when are we getting a brightburn sequel? The first one was fantastic, but there are so many unanswered questions.” Gunn responded with a blunt yet simple: “No plans at all for this right now.

There Are Plenty of James Gunn Projects To Be Excited About Right Now

Gunn is now leading the DC Universe.

While Brightburn 2 may not be happening in the meantime, Gunn is still as busy as ever when it comes to his career.

Despite the interesting concept, Brightburn was met with mixed reviews from critics. However, audience reception was better, leaving some anticipation for a sequel. In particular, the horror retelling was a financial success, earning $32.9 million against an estimated budget of $6 million to $12 million. Yarovesky had detailed the potential idea for the sequel based on references from the movie, and Dunn expressed his interest in reprising the role. Unfortunately, progress on the sequel has since stalled, probably due to Gunn now focused on the DC Universe.

The Brightburn producer is currently helming the DCU to revamp the superhero universe. At the time of writing, the multi-hyphenate talent has multiple projects in the works. This year alone includes writing for the adult animation superhero show Creature Commandos and working as a consultant for Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be part of the Extended Universe. In 2025, Gunn will also be directing Superman: Legacy, while his Max-created show Peacemaker season 2 is expected to start filming this summer.

While Brightburn 2 may not be happening in the meantime, Gunn is still as busy as ever when it comes to his career. It is also possible that the sequel could restart development at some point, as the producer just said that there was no active plan “right now,” which leaves options open for the future. Most likely, there may be a better sense of what the Brightburn future holds once Gunn gets through some of his major projects.
