FOX Cancels Brooklyn Nine-Nine & More

It is a dark day for comedy lovers, as FOX announces the cancelation of three sitcoms, The age and Proven Innocent, as well as another comedy with The Cool Kids, starring David Allen Grier, Martin Mull, Vicki Lawrence, and Leslie Jordan.

FOX is certainly going to need an infusion of comedy for its fall schedule after losing four sitcoms at the end of this season. In addition to the three series that just received their walking papers, the long-running New Girl is set to bring things to a close next Tuesday with an hour-long series finale. The network has several other comedies to consider after having ordered pilots for Bless This Mess, Dan the Weatherman, Our Family, Rel, and two untitled projects from Erin Foster and Rob McElhenney.

The news of the three cancellations was reported by Timeless), a vocal fan base isn’t enough to save a series that’s struggling to pull in the kind of live numbers necessary to keep it afloat.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Last Man on Earth and The Mick FOX

Thankfully, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cancelation comes after the show hit the 100-episode mark, and has since gone into syndication. The same unfortunately isn’t true of Last Man on Earth or The Mick, which just wrapped up their fourth and second seasons, respectively. Like Nine-Nine, the single-camera comedies brought respectable critical praise, but never brought in massive numbers, and since we’re living in a post-Roseanne revival era of television, it’s no surprise that networks might be chasing those kinds of numbers instead of sticking to modest, well-liked hits like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, and The Mick.

Both The Mick and Last Man on Earth have already aired their season (now series) finales, but you can still watch the Brooklyn Nine-Nine finale live on May 20, with the appropriately titled ‘Jake & Amy.’
