Adrien Brody has officially broken a world record for his Brody took home a win for Best Actor for his work in the acclaimed film The Brutalist. Brody beat out four other actors, including A-lister Timothée Chalamet, who was highly acclaimed for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. The Brutalist won 3 of its 10 nominations. In addition to Best Actor, the epic drama won Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.
Per Guinness World Records, Brody officially broke an Oscars world record for the longest acceptance speech of all time. Brody's acceptance speech ended up lasting 5 minutes and 40 seconds long. This is 10 seconds longer than the previous record holder, Greer Garson, who made a 5-minute and 30-second-long acceptance speech for Best Actress in 1943, winning for her role in Mrs. Miniver.
What This Meant For The Oscars
Other People Had Been Played Off Before Brody
Brody forced his way into this record, as he talked over the playoff music intending to usher him offstage, saying "Please turn the music off, I've done this before, thank you." Here, Brody referenced his own status as an Oscar veteran, as he previously won Best Actor for his work in The Pianist in 2003. Brody was not the first person whose speech was cut short by playoff music, as the academy also did so for awards like Best International Feature and Best Sound.

Our Take On Brody's Acceptance Speech Record
Brody Ended Up Being Egregious In The End
Though he cast a wide net talking about the state of the world, Brody did use a portion of his time to speak about real-world themes relevant to The Brutalist. Still, I found his use of time to be fairly arrogant given we had just witnessed the playoff of far more historic wins, including Brazil's first Oscar for I'm Still Here. Brody's record only further emphasizes this point, proving that the seemingly endlessness of his speech last night was not just imagined, but a record-breaking use of time.
