Buffy the Vampire Slayer star David Boreanaz celebrates the series' 28th anniversary in a social media post. Playing the immortal vampire Angel, Boreanaz began his 8-year tenure as the character in the pilot episode of the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed the titular character in her fight against the demons and the forces of evil in the fictional California town of Sunnydale. Created by Joss Whedon, the show became a cult phenomenon and ran for 7 seasons. A mid-season replacement, Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 1 premiered on March 10, 1997.
Reflecting on the series, Boreanaz shares a post on Instagram commemorating the anniversary. Boreanaz writes "This small show premiered on this date back in 1997." The image of Buffy and Angel is accompanied by the song "Forever Young" by Alphaville. In the replies to his post, Buffy actor Sarah Michelle Gellar writes "Wait for real?!?" alongside his sire and fellow vampire actor Julie Benz, who also appeared in the pilot, saying "Wowowowowowowoowowow!!!!!"
What This Means For Buffy's Legacy
Boreanaz Appeared More Than Any Other Actor
As Boreanaz notes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a small show on The WB, which was still a network in its infancy that was trying to carve out a name for itself. The series was based on a 1992 movie of the same name that Whedon wrote, which was a box office bomb, making $16.6 million off of a reported $7 million budget. Revamped for television, it became one of the defining shows of its generation.
With a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series currently in the works at Hulu, there has been renewed hope that Boreanaz may reprise his role as Angel.
While he did appear in the pilot episode, Boreanaz was originally billed as a guest star throughout season 1, which only had 12 episodes compared to the 22 episodes for seasons 2-7. He was added to the main cast in season 2 before departing for his own spinoff, Angel, after season 3. As Angel concluded its run in 2004, a full year after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, Boreanaz is in more episodes than any other actor, appearing in 168 episodes as Angel.
Our Take On Boreanaz's Post
He Is Likely Done With The Character
Boreanaz's post shows a fond reflection for the series that launched his career. Since appearing in the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he has been a constant starring presence on TV. Going from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to Angel, a 9 season stint on Bones, and most recently, SEAL Team, he has an undeniably impressive career. With a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series currently in the works at Hulu, there has been renewed hope that Boreanaz may reprise his role as Angel.
However, for years he has stated he does not have any interest in returning to the vampire with a soul. Since the reboot was announced, he replied to a comment on Gellar's Instagram stating "Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed." While this is not definitive, it does give the impression he is not involved. Despite past comments, hopefully, he is still involved in the future of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
