The news that Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot still needs the rest of the original Scooby gang to return for the show to succeed, this is nonetheless an exciting development for a project that has spent years in turnaround.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot always needed Gellar’s return, but the show needs more than just her to revive the spirit of the original series. As noted above, the ing cast needs to reprise their roles, since Buffy the Vampire Slayer wouldn’t be the same without Willow, Giles, and Spike. Although Spike was technically killed off in the original finale, he was resurrected in the spinoff series Angel and can appear in the reboot as a result. Then there is the question of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s villains to contend with.
Glory Wasn't Used To Her Full Villainous Potential In Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Original Run
Clare Kramer’s Dark God Glory Was Almost Unstoppable In Her Pure Form
Introduced in season 5, Glory was Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s most underused villain in the show’s original run. Although she was season 5’s main villain, rather than just a monster of the week, this recurring antagonist was a cut above her predecessors. In earlier seasons, the main villains were vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings that challenged Buffy and the gang but remained within their wheelhouse. Glory was the god of a hell dimension, so although she was trapped in the body of a human child, she was far more powerful than those earlier villains.
The human body containing Glory's essence could be killed and this would destroy her.
Glory’s dark magic meant that humans who encountered her and Ben would never understand that they were the same being, even after she revealed herself to them. Glory possessed the powers of a god and, as such, could manipulate reality, defeat Buffy and her gang easily, and feed off the minds of mortals. However, she did have a weakness. The human body containing Glory's essence could be killed and this would destroy her unless she merged her home hell dimension with Sunnydale using the Key beforehand.
Why Glory Would Be Perfect For The Buffy Reboot
Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Reboot Needs To Bring Back Classic Characters
Glory was defeated in season 5’s finale when Buffy and the Scooby gang used Buffy’s strength, Willow’s magic, Spike’s infamous Buffybot, the Dagon Sphere, the Troll God’s Hammer, and even a wrecking ball to take her down. Once she is returned to Ben’s body, Giles is forced to kill the child so that she can never return. Despite this bleak ending, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot could bring back Glory when the sequel series arrives.
Glory was first introduced in season 5, episode 5, "No Place Like Home," and defeated in season 5, episode 22, "The Gift."
Glory was only ever trapped in a mortal body, and there was no way of knowing where her essence went after this human vessel was destroyed. She was ittedly weakened by her battle with the Scooby gang’s combined forces, but she wasn’t able to use the full breadth of her powers during this fight. Glory boasted super strength, shape-shifting, super speed, and straightforward dark magic among her abilities, and this was when her powers were diminished by the limitations of her human vessel.
Now that Buffy has decades more experience as a slayer, it is perfect timing for a more balanced rematch.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot could show viewers the true extent of Glory’s abilities, thus making up for her disappointing fate in season 5. Although the outing is a solid season, there is no getting around the reality that Buffy the Vampire Slayer never delved into the true extent of Glory’s powers. Glory could have defeated Buffy too easily, so she needed to be limited to be limited by Ben. Now that Buffy has decades more experience as a slayer, it is perfect timing for a more balanced rematch.
How Glory Can Return In Buffy The Vampire Slayer's New Series
Glory Could Come Back In a New Body
Much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot should bring back Tara after her devastating and pointless death in season 6, the show’s revival also needs to give Glory a fitting comeback. Fortunately, the original series effectively set this up already. Glory was only temporarily defeated when Buffy forced her back into Ben’s body and out of Sunnydale, prompting Giles to kill Ben afterward. Glory could return in a new human body in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot, ready to wreak havoc all over again.
This would be a smart twist since a new appearance could make Glory feel like an original character while still continuing the story of the original series. Reinventing and recasting old characters for a new generation is a perfect way for the reboot to balance nostalgia and originality. Thus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s reboot needs to bring back Glory, even if it is in a new guise.
