An update for the potential reboot of the cult fantasy drama series cast of Buffy has gone on to varying degrees of success since leaving the show, and its legacy remains prominent, with a potential reboot of the series reported to be close to a pilot order with Hulu.

Per TVLine, the new Slayer is described as a cerebral 16-year-old named Nova (though the name may be a placeholder), who is very smart and a bit of a loner. Nova's character will reportedly be more like Alyson Hannigan's Willow than Gellar's Buffy. Among her friends are Hugo – described as an out-and-proud nerd who comes from money – and Gracie, a young expert on vampires aligned with Gellar’s Buffy, who is also set to appear in a recurring role. Casting is currently underway for all three roles.

What This Means For The Buffy Revival Show

A Fresh Take On Classic Characters Could Be The Shakeup This Reboot Needs

Gellar's confirmation that she will reprise her role as the iconic Slayer in the planned sequel series showed that this will be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival show as opposed to a reboot, and this could work well in of the characters. Trying to recast the iconic "Scooby Gang" of Buffy, Willow, Cordelia, Xander, Giles, and Angel would be a near-impossible feat, and the show has wisely chosen to sidestep this issue with a fresh collection of characters, which could be the shakeup this show needs to stand out from its predecessor.

Cordelia Chase actress Charisma Carpenter recently expressed interest in reprising her role in the revival, despite her character's death in the final season of Buffy's spinoff show Angel.

If the new Slayer shares more similarities with Willow than Buffy, it's a step in the right direction to have the show carve out its own identity. Gellar's addition to the cast is also an important step in preserving the iconic legacy of the original show, as well as fulfilling a role that could involve the metaphorical ing of the torch. Nothing has been revealed about casting choices for the new characters yet.

Our Verdict On The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Sequel

There's A Chance More Legacy Actors Could Return

The show's casting direction is unclear right now, but there is a chance that, due to the revival nature of the series, there could be more legacy characters returning alongside Gellar. Cordelia Chase actress Charisma Carpenter recently expressed interest in reprising her role in the revival, despite her character's death in the final season of Buffy's spinoff show Angel. The show has yet to be officially picked up, but if it is, this could see other stars like Carpenter taking small roles in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, as well as casting for a larger pool of main characters.
