The creator Joss Whedon's on-set behavior, there have been ongoing rumors about a revival for years. Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar officially signed on to the show recently and is hard at work on a sequel.

In an interview with People, Sarah Michelle Gellar explained that "things are progressing probably faster" than she expected. While she its that the show is still early in its development, she is particularly proud of the new crew. She specifically named executive Gail Berman, writers Nora (Fringe) and Lilla Zuckerman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and director Chloé Zhao (Eternals) as standouts in the production process. Check out her quote below:

We've set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I'd anticipated. But it's going to be a process, I think. To do it the way it needs to be done, everyone has to be patient with all of us, because this isn't something that [will just happen].

I pinch myself every day when I get into these rooms, and I'm looking at Gail Berman, the Zuckermans and Chloé Zhao. It's an incredible group. There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me, and ask my advice on things and my opinion — especially because she hasn't done television. She'll call me, and she'll say, 'Well, I have to defer to you,' and I'm like, 'Wait, what?' Those aren't words I ever thought I would hear.

What Gellar's Update Means For The Buffy Revival

The Show Is Actively In Development

The rumors of a Buffy return have been ongoing since the show ended, and they have only grown stronger in the years since Disney bought Fox. With Disney having acquired the brand, they gained control of Buffy's IP, making a revival feel practically inevitable. Gellar's willingness to return means that the Buffy revival show should retain the performances, action, and character moments that made the original so compelling. Gellar previously insisted that she would not return "unless I was sure we would get it right", which is a great sign for this series.

The show will feature another Slayer as its star, rather than focusing solely on Buffy.

The fact that this show is not being rushed to production is also excellent news. While Gellar was surprised that they have already set up their offices, she and the crew are still taking their time to ensure that they perfectly translate the show into a new era. It will be difficult balancing the canon of the Buffy comics with the necessary changes that any show needs to make after so long off TV. Gellar described the return as a "heartwarming" and "nerve-wracking" experience previously, so taking the process slowly will ensure that everyone remains comfortable with its progress.

Our Take On Gellar's Buffy The Vampire Slayer Update

They Are Doing Everything Right

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1

Anytime a show of this magnitude is revived, the crew faces a terrifying task. They need to cater to older viewers, engage new audiences, and live up to unenviable expectations. Still, the crew is already an extraordinary collection of people. With so many excellent producers, writers, and stars working alongside Chloé Zhao, there should be little doubt that this series will be enthralling. If the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival was rushed to production, it might be concerning, but Gellar and the crew are taking it slow, so there is no real need to worry.
