The reboot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced in July of 2018. As of this writing, no further information regarding a release date has surfaced. While two years does seem like a long time to go without an attached release date, there was no script for the series when it was first brought up as a prospective project, and there's no network attached yet. Because Disney now owns 20th Century Fox and Hulu, there has been some speculation that Buffy the Vampire Slayer could go to Hulu or Disney+ instead of network television. The project is also being developed at Fox 21 TV studios, which is the cable streaming division of 20th Century Fox. There's also speculation that the Buffy reboot could go to The CW, which rebooted Charmed, because it is the successor to The WB, which was the network that first aired Buffy.

The story behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer's reboot is still largely unknown. However, it has been said that the new series seeks to expand on the existing mythos of the Buffy-verse. The producers have been quoted as saying, "like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today". Another rumor that has surfaced is that the new Slayer could be played by an African-American actress. If this is true, it could bring race relations and political power dynamic into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which has endured for almost thirty years.
